Tragedy in Woolwich: A Teenager Charged with Murder

A shocking incident has left the community of Woolwich in London reeling after a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in a stairwell. The victim, Eghosa Ogbebor, was found lifeless on Lord Warwick Street on April 2, following an emergency call at 3:40 pm. The teenager accused of the crime, a 16-year-old from Romford, made a court appearance via video-link from HMP Felton, charged with murder.

The incident is said to have occurred after a chase, during which the accused allegedly shot Mr. Ogbebor in the chest. According to the prosecution, led by William Emlyn Jones KC, the shooting took place at the top of the stairwell, resulting in fatal injuries. The accused was initially arrested on April 4, two days after the attack, and released on bail. However, he was re-arrested on April 9 and charged with murder the following day. A provisional trial date has been set for January 18, 2027, marking a significant step in the legal proceedings.

In addition to the accused, three other individuals were arrested in connection with the case. A 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were taken into custody on suspicion of murder, while a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All were released on bail. Additionally, two boys aged 14 and 16, along with an 18-year-old man, were bailed after being arrested on April 3. A further 16-year-old boy was arrested on April 10 on suspicion of murder.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the killing, calling it “appalling” and expressing his thoughts for the family, friends, and wider community in Woolwich. He emphasized that there is “absolutely no place for this heartbreaking violence.”

At Eghosa’s family home in Abbey Wood, his aunt shared touching insights about the young boy. She revealed that he had told his mother he was going out to film a rap video. The tragedy has left his mother devastated, with her son’s death described as a devastating blow.

She told Metro, “He loved music; he was so talented and lived for it. On the day he was shot, he had gone out to film a video with his friends. He never came back. His mother is broken. He was so young, he had his whole life ahead of him. He was so young, just a boy.”
