C-3PO’s Golden Head Fetches Over $1 Million at Auction
A gleaming piece of Star Wars history, the head of the beloved protocol droid C-3PO from The Empire Strikes Back, has officially crossed the threshold into the exclusive million-dollar collectibles club. This iconic prop commanded a staggering $1,058,400 (approximately €980,000) at a recent auction, cementing its place as a highly sought-after item for dedicated fans and investors.
The sale took place earlier this week at Propstore’s Spring Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction in Los Angeles. What makes this particular C-3PO head so remarkable is its rarity; it is believed to be the only screen-used example of the golden droid’s head ever to become available on the collector’s market. With a pre-sale estimate ranging from $350,000 to $700,000 (€323,000 to €646,000), the final hammer price significantly exceeded expectations, highlighting the immense value placed on authentic film memorabilia.

A Bounty of Film Treasures on Offer
The auction wasn’t solely dominated by droids. A diverse array of cinematic relics attracted keen bidding from cinephiles and collectors alike. Among the standout items was the harpoon gun famously wielded by Robert Shaw’s gruff shark hunter, Quint, in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 summer blockbuster, Jaws. This significant prop, complete with its original casing, sold for an impressive $327,600 (€303,000).
Further adding to the Jaws collection, the Fenwick fishing rod and reel used by Quint during his harrowing encounters with the great white shark also found a new owner. This screen-used prop fetched a jaw-dropping $239,400 (€221,000), demonstrating the enduring appeal of this cinematic masterpiece.
In a poignant display of pop culture’s impact, Wilson, the inanimate volleyball that served as Tom Hanks’ sole companion in the survival drama Cast Away, exceeded its own expectations. It sold for $189,000 (€175,000), comfortably surpassing its estimated value of $150,000-$300,000 (€139,000-€278,000).

Fantasy Worlds and Sweet Memories
The auction also catered to enthusiasts of fantasy and beloved children’s tales. For fans of Middle-earth, broken fragments of a sword from The Lord of the Rings trilogy commanded a price of $252,000 (€233,000). Meanwhile, the intricate Marauder’s Map from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban garnered a winning bid of $59,850 (€55,000).
Adding a touch of whimsical nostalgia, a golden ticket from Gene Wilder’s original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory also achieved a significant sale, bringing in $107,100 (€99,000).
Star Wars Collectibles: A History of Record-Breaking Sales
While the C-3PO head was undoubtedly a highlight of this year’s auction, the Star Wars franchise has a proven track record of generating astronomical sums for its props. Last year, a lightsaber wielded by Darth Vader across the original trilogy – A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983) – set a new benchmark, selling for a colossal $3.6 million (approximately €3 million).
This iconic red lightsaber’s sale, which included a $2.9 million hammer price plus a $700,000 buyer’s premium paid to the auction house, made it the most valuable item ever sold from the beloved film franchise at that time. It surpassed the previous record holder, a Boba Fett action figure from Star Wars, which fetched an impressive $1.342 million (approximately €1.144 million) in 2024.
The final day of bidding for the current auction concludes on 27 March, promising further exciting results for rare entertainment memorabilia.
