New Performance Features for the 2026 Toyota RAV4
Toyota Australia is set to introduce a range of performance enhancements for its most popular SUV, the RAV4. These upgrades include wind tunnel-tested front and rear spoilers, designed to improve aerodynamics and stability at higher speeds.
The company will also launch its first-ever RAV4 plug-in hybrid model, featuring a Gazoo Racing (GR) Sport variant that offers more sporty styling and handling improvements. This GR Sport version of the SUV is expected to attract enthusiasts looking for a blend of performance and practicality.
While the RAV4 GR Sport is available with a 2.5-litre petrol engine and plug-in hybrid system, the same powertrain is also offered on the penultimate XSE grade in Australia. However, there are key differences between the top-spec GR Sport, priced at $66,340 before on-road costs, and the XSE, which starts from $58,840.
Key Differences Between the GR Sport and XSE
One of the main distinctions is that the GR Sport is all-wheel drive only, producing a combined output of 242kW. In contrast, the XSE PHEV offers this as an optional feature over the standard 200kW front-wheel-drive PHEV setup.

In terms of design, the XSE PHEV RAV4 features black accents on the front bumper, underbody, and wheel arches. Toyota’s marketing materials describe the GR Sport RAV4 as “a design that combines coolness and functionality,” highlighting elements such as a front lip and rear roof spoiler.
Enhanced Styling and Engineering
The GR Sport also includes specially-tuned suspension, revised steering, a performance damper for the chassis, and rear subframe bracing. Toyota claims that the front splitter and rear wing of the GR Sport were developed through repeated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing to generate actual downforce at speed, while improving stability.
Compared to the XSE model, the GR Sport adds additional bracing to reduce unintended movement in the vehicle’s front end. The rear subframe has also been upgraded to enhance steering feel, according to Toyota.

Performance Enhancements
The GR Sport PHEV features tuned suspension for further stability and control, aligning with its sportier ambitions. Its electric power steering rack has also been adjusted, with the interior mode selector adding weight to the steering when switching between Normal and Sport modes.
Additionally, the GR Sport grades come with wider wheels to improve roadholding. These are now 20 inches in diameter, paired with red brake calipers behind them.
Upcoming Launch and Availability
Deliveries of the 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV are expected to begin mid-year, following the release of the regular hybrid model in showrooms. This new lineup is set to offer a compelling combination of performance, technology, and efficiency for Australian drivers.
