Lachlan Rose Set for Scottish Switch to Dundee United
Newcastle Jets’ prolific forward, Lachlan Rose, is reportedly on the verge of a significant career move, with reports from Scotland strongly suggesting he will join A-League alumni Zac Sapsford at Scottish Premiership club Dundee United next season. The 26-year-old attacker has been a standout performer for the Jets this season, playing a pivotal role in their ascent to the top of the A-League ladder, contributing an impressive eight goals.

The proposed two-year deal for Rose with the “Tangerines,” as Dundee United is affectionately known, is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming week. This potential transfer signals a growing trend of Australian talent seeking opportunities abroad, with Sapsford, a former Western Sydney Wanderers attacker and Socceroos hopeful, having already established himself at Dundee United last season.
Rose isn’t the only current A-League star making the move to the Scottish club. Auckland FC attacker Jesse Randall is also slated to join Dundee United at the conclusion of the current Australian domestic season. This influx of A-League talent highlights the growing appeal of the Scottish Premiership to players emerging from Australia’s top footballing flight.
The impending departures of Rose and Randall will see them go head-to-head this Saturday at McDonald Jones Stadium, where the Newcastle Jets will host Auckland in what promises to be a crucial top-of-the-table clash. This fixture will offer fans a glimpse of the talent that will soon be gracing Scottish football.
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin, whose squad already boasts Australian talent in former Adelaide United right-back Ryan Strain and goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, was characteristically tight-lipped regarding Rose’s imminent transfer. When pressed by the Scottish press, Goodwin stated, “There’s nothing been confirmed or finalised with regards to any players, apart from the ones that we’ve spoken about previously, like Jesse Randall. There’s nothing to say with regards to Lachlan Rose at this moment in time.”
Despite the manager’s reticence, Newcastle Jets coach Mark Milligan expressed immense pride and happiness for Rose. Speaking on Friday, Milligan conveyed his delight, stating, “I don’t think anything’s done and dusted yet … but it’s a testament to him, and a lot of players can take away how he goes about his work and what he does, not just on the weekend, but the person that he is and the work ethic that he has, has got him these opportunities.”
Milligan further elaborated on Rose’s character and dedication: “He deserves everything that he gets, and I have no doubt he will want to finish this (season), he’ll want to finish being in Australia off as strong as he can, and he’ll want to put the club in a position to be better moving forward.” This sentiment underscores the professional attitude Rose has brought to the Jets during his tenure.
The potential departure of Lachlan Rose is part of a broader shift for the Newcastle Jets, who also face the prospect of losing other key players. Star pair Clinton Taylor and Lachlan Bayliss are reportedly attracting interest, along with Ben Gibson and Oscar Fryer. This suggests a period of rebuilding for the club as they navigate the transfer window and prepare for future seasons. The success of players like Rose in securing moves to established European leagues will undoubtedly inspire other emerging Australian talents.
