Abhishek Sharma Fined for Using Obscene Language During IPL Match
Sunrisers Hyderabad opening batter Abhishek Sharma has been fined and awarded a demerit point following his team’s victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Thursday, April 2. The Indian Premier League (IPL) took action after determining that he used obscene language during the match.
Abhishek was fined 25 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. The match referee stated that he violated Article 2.3, which addresses the use of offensive, obscene, and inappropriate language that could be picked up by a stump mic or heard by spectators.
The IPL confirmed that Abhishek admitted to the offense and did not file an appeal. A statement from the league said:
“Abhishek Sharma, All-rounder, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday. He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”
While the exact timing of the incident was not disclosed, many believe it occurred when Abhishek was frustrated after being given out for a marginal call by the third umpire. Varun Chakravarthy executed a fine catch in the deep, and although there was some uncertainty and review, the batter was declared out by the third-umpire.
Strong Performance with the Bat
Despite the off-field issue, Abhishek delivered a strong performance with the bat. After failing to contribute significantly in SRH’s first game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he found his form against KKR.
He scored 48 runs off 21 balls, hitting four boundaries and four sixes. Abhishek displayed a high level of intent with his stroke play, providing a quick start for SRH. His cameo helped SRH post a formidable total of 226 runs, and the SRH bowlers restricted KKR to 161 in 16 overs, securing a massive victory.
