Adelaide Coach Matthew Nicks Expresses Frustration After Disappointing Loss to Fremantle
Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks has voiced his frustration after his team’s inability to maintain consistent performance throughout the entire game, resulting in a heartbreaking loss against Fremantle. The Crows came dangerously close to securing a win but ultimately fell short due to a critical error late in the match.
The game, played at Adelaide Oval on Friday night, was a thrilling contest that saw the home side stage an incredible second-half comeback. Starting with a 34-point deficit, the Crows fought back valiantly against the fast-starting Dockers. However, despite taking a 10-point lead in the final term, they were unable to hold onto their advantage, as Fremantle managed to score the final two goals of the game and secure a narrow two-point victory.
One of the most pivotal moments of the game came when Reilly O’Brien, a key player for the Crows, made a crucial mistake. O’Brien lost possession at the mark, and instead of delivering a decisive kick inside 50, he hurriedly attempted a pass that was intercepted by Fremantle’s ruckman Sean Darcy. This error allowed the Dockers to launch a counterattack that led to the game-clinching goal.
Josh Treacy, a standout player for Fremantle, scored the decisive goal with just under seven minutes remaining, putting the visitors ahead once again. Despite the Crows’ best efforts in the closing moments, Fremantle’s defense held firm, ensuring their hard-fought victory.

O’Brien, who had previously been the team’s No. 1 ruckman, has seen his position challenged by Lachlan McAndrew. However, Nicks chose to play both tall players in this match. Fans, however, have been vocal in their criticism, urging the coach to reconsider this strategy after the costly mistake that cost the Crows the game.
Adelaide’s struggles were not limited to the final quarter. The team’s first half was lacklustre, contributing to another close game. James Borlase nearly snatched a late victory for the Crows, but his shot hit the post. Similarly, James Peatling was denied by a crucial smother from Fremantle captain Alex Pearce in the final seconds.
Nicks was visibly frustrated after the match, highlighting the team’s inability to perform consistently across all four quarters. “We can’t allow our opposition to dictate the game on their terms like we did in the first half,” he said. “It’s clear that the issue is our ability to execute. It’s making us really angry that we’re not able to get it done for four quarters.”
He continued: “When you’re playing against strong teams, which we’ve done for a month, you get what you deserve. We got smashed at the contest. There’s an ability to direct your focus and get it done, and we’re not doing that at the moment—especially in critical moments.”
The loss marks the third consecutive game where Adelaide has fallen short by less than 10 points, leaving fans and players alike questioning what needs to change for the team to consistently perform at its best. As the season progresses, Nicks will need to address these issues head-on if the Crows are to turn their fortunes around.
