U2’s Easter Lily EP: A Reflection on Friendship, Loss, and Hope
U2 has once again made a significant return to the music scene with their latest release, Easter Lily EP (Island), which has been awarded four stars. The band, known for their powerful anthems and deep emotional storytelling, has delivered another compelling collection of songs that showcases their growth and evolution over the years.
The adage about London buses—waiting nine years for a new album and then getting two in quick succession—seems to have come true for U2 fans. Just a few months ago, the Irish quartet released Days Of Ash, an extended play featuring six protest songs, marking their first new material since 2017. Now, they are back with another six tracks in just six weeks, setting the stage for a new album that promises to be “defiantly joyful.”
A More Reflective Approach
Unlike Days Of Ash, which was more politically charged and protest-oriented, Easter Lily is described as a more reflective and personal work. The EP delves into themes of friendship, loss, and hope, offering listeners a glimpse into the band’s more intimate side. The musical style also takes a different turn, with the dynamic guitar work of The Edge playing a central role.
The Edge’s effects-heavy playing is particularly prominent in the first two tracks of the EP. On Song For Hal, a heartfelt tribute to American record producer Hal Willner, who passed away during the pandemic in 2020, The Edge even takes on lead vocals. His jagged chords create a haunting atmosphere that perfectly complements the song’s somber tone.
On In A Life, Bono reflects on the importance of friendship, singing, “I never achieved anything on my own.” This line encapsulates the emotional core of the EP, emphasizing the value of human connection and support.
Spiritual Themes and Musical Diversity
The second half of the EP explores spiritual themes, making it a fitting release for the Easter season. Resurrection Song tells the story of a road trip with a lover or friend, blending imagery of travel with deeper philosophical reflections. Meanwhile, Easter Parade channels the psychedelic energy reminiscent of The Beatles, showcasing U2’s ability to blend different musical influences into a cohesive sound.
Another standout track, Coexist (I Will Bless The Lord At All Times?), features the return of long-term collaborator Brian Eno. His involvement reinforces the sense of a band looking to the past while simultaneously embracing the future, creating a unique balance between tradition and innovation.

A New Chapter for U2
With Easter Lily, U2 continues to prove that they are not only capable of producing high-quality music but also of evolving with each release. The EP serves as a prelude to their upcoming album, which is expected to be a major event in the music world this year. Fans can look forward to a mix of introspective lyrics, powerful guitar riffs, and a deeper exploration of the human experience.
As the band prepares to unveil their next project, Easter Lily stands as a testament to their enduring creativity and artistic vision. Whether through protest songs or more personal reflections, U2 remains one of the most influential and respected bands in modern music.
