The Carolina Hurricanes continued their strong performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning, securing a 4-2 victory on Saturday night. The win was highlighted by key contributions from Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, who each recorded a goal and an assist, and a significant coaching milestone for Carolina’s Rod Brind’Amour.
A Coaching Milestone and a Tight Game
Carolina’s head coach, Rod Brind’Amour, reached a notable achievement in his career, coaching his 600th game for the franchise. This victory marked his 367th career win, setting a new record for the most wins by a head coach at the 600-game juncture. Brind’Amour surpassed the previous record held by Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper, who had 364 wins at the same milestone.
The game itself remained a close contest for much of the night. Jordan Martinook ultimately broke the third-period tie, and Frederik Andersen made crucial saves, stopping 17 shots to preserve the lead. Logan Stankoven sealed the victory with an empty-net goal late in the game.
For the Tampa Bay Lightning, Yanni Gourde and Charle-Edouard D’Astous found the back of the net. However, the loss extended Tampa Bay’s struggles since the Olympic break, dropping their record to 3-7. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was busy throughout the game, making 31 saves.
Early Momentum and a Second-Period Response
The Hurricanes established an early advantage, scoring on their opening shift of the game amidst a delayed penalty call. The sequence began with Svechnikov being denied a close-range opportunity, which led to a penalty. Moments later, left unattended in front of the net, Svechnikov received a pass from Aho and scored just 36 seconds into the contest.
The dynamic duo of Aho and Svechnikov connected again late in the first period. Aho was stopped on a breakaway, but he managed to retrieve the puck and set up Svechnikov with a quick pass from the side of the net, extending Carolina’s lead. This marked the third consecutive game this season where the Hurricanes built a multi-goal lead in the first period against Tampa Bay, showcasing a consistent ability to start strong against their divisional rivals.
However, the Lightning demonstrated resilience by mounting a comeback in the second period, scoring a pair of goals to even the score and make the game a true battle.
The Deciding Third Period
The third period saw the game hanging in the balance until Jordan Martinook’s pivotal goal. Martinook’s shot from outside the left circle deflected off Victor Hedman’s skate and found its way into the far post at 9:18, breaking the tie and giving the Hurricanes a lead they would not relinquish.
Looking Ahead
The Carolina Hurricanes will continue their road trip as they face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. The Tampa Bay Lightning are also set for a road game, traveling to face the Seattle Kraken on the same day.
The Hurricanes’ ability to capitalize on early opportunities and maintain defensive pressure, coupled with Brind’Amour’s coaching prowess, proved to be the difference in this matchup. The Lightning will need to find a way to close out games and regain their pre-Olympic break form if they hope to climb the standings.
