Ajinkya Rahane fires back at critics, cites jealousy and bias

Ajinkya Rahane Faces Criticism Amid IPL 2024 Struggles

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane has found himself under increased scrutiny following a series of challenging performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The team has endured back-to-back losses, and Rahane’s recent batting form has come under fire, particularly his strike rate. During a post-match press conference, the KKR skipper expressed frustration when confronted with questions about his performance.

Rahane had scored just 8 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by Sunrisers Hyderabad. In response to the criticism, he defended his approach to batting, emphasizing that his strike rate has consistently been among the top performers since 2023. He accused some critics of having an ‘agenda’ against him and claimed they were not paying attention to his overall contributions.

“I think my strike rate has been among the best since 2023. Those criticising me are not paying attention to the matches or have an agenda against me. They don’t enjoy seeing me play,” Rahane stated during the press conference.

A History of Strong Performances

Despite the recent setbacks, Rahane has had moments of brilliance in the past. When he captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2025 season, he amassed 390 runs from 13 matches at a strike rate of 147.73. However, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs, which added to the pressure on Rahane as a leader.

The criticism surrounding his strike rate has not gone unnoticed. Rahane dismissed the negative feedback as being driven by jealousy over his achievements. He pointed out that while one bad inning might be highlighted, it doesn’t reflect his overall intent as a batter.

“The success I’ve achieved probably makes some people jealous. I’m not too concerned about it. You all know how I play. Sure, just one bad inning is not a bad innings, because my intent was right. As a batter, sometimes you just can’t find your rhythm or flow. Those criticising either don’t understand the game or expect me to play differently,” he explained.

Improving His T20 Game

Rahane has worked hard to refine his T20 game after joining Chennai Super Kings in 2023. That season, he finished with 326 runs at a notable strike rate of 172.49. However, the following year, 2024, proved less productive, with only 242 runs at a strike rate of 123.47. After being released by Chennai, he moved to KKR for the 2025 season.

Rahane acknowledged that expectations may have been high, but he remained unfazed by the criticism. “They didn’t expect me to show my game at this level,” he said. “So, whether the talk about me is positive or negative, I’m happy they’re talking. I’m fine with it, let them talk.”

Looking Ahead

As KKR continues its journey in the IPL, Rahane remains focused on leading the team to success. While the current challenges are evident, his determination to perform and adapt remains strong. With experience and a clear mindset, Rahane is ready to face whatever comes next, regardless of the noise around him.
