Amstell: Ayahuasca Banishes Sexuality Shame

Simon Amstell’s Ayahuasca Journey: Unlocking Acceptance and Overcoming Shame

Comedian and television personality Simon Amstell, a familiar face on screens since the 1990s and widely recognised for his energetic hosting on Popworld in the early 2000s, has candidly revealed how an experience with the potent South American psychoactive tea, ayahuasca, was instrumental in helping him overcome deep-seated feelings of shame surrounding his sexuality. Amstell, who came out as gay at the age of 21, has consistently explored themes of sexuality and identity throughout his creative work, including the semi-autobiographical sitcom Grandma’s House and the 2018 feature film Benjamin, which delves into the life of a closeted gay writer.

In a recent interview, Amstell spoke about the profound impact of ayahuasca, describing it as a transformative experience that fundamentally altered his relationship with his own identity. He explained that prior to this encounter, he had lived with an overwhelming sense of shame, often too fearful to even acknowledge his desires. However, the ayahuasca ceremony offered him a profound sense of freedom, flooding him with feelings of love, acceptance, and pleasure.

“I wasn’t ashamed any more,” Amstell stated. “It really is incredible to reconnect with the forces of the natural world and be given a choice: lean into shame — or pleasure.” This sentiment highlights the powerful dichotomy he experienced, where the traditional societal pressures and internalised shame were replaced by an embrace of self-acceptance and innate joy.

The comedian has previously touched upon the varied reactions from his family upon coming out, recalling how his father suggested he seek therapy. Reflecting on this strained paternal relationship, Amstell acknowledged the significant emotional toll of not being loved or accepted by a parent. He shared a particularly poignant anecdote from his last meeting with his father, approximately a year prior, where his father expressed his resignation to Amstell’s perceived eternal damnation: “I last saw him about a year ago and he said, ‘I guess I’ve come to terms with the idea that you will end up going to hell.’” This stark statement underscores the ongoing challenges and deep-seated prejudices he has navigated.

The Ayahuasca Experience: A Deeper Dive

Ayahuasca ceremonies, traditionally conducted in the Amazon rainforest by indigenous shamans, typically involve guiding small groups through an intense and often lengthy psychological journey. This ancient practice has gained increasing attention globally for its potential therapeutic benefits, with a growing number of individuals, including celebrities, sharing their personal experiences.

Simon Amstell is certainly not alone in his positive testimonials. Hollywood actor Will Smith has also spoken openly about the profound impact of ayahuasca, crediting the substance with initiating his “spiritual journey.” Smith described the experience not as a hallucination, but as a state where multiple realities coexist with absolute intensity. He elaborated, “You’re not hallucinating. It’s like both realities are 100 per cent present… There’s what’s going on in your head and what’s going on in the room. Once you drink it, you’re gonna see yourself in a way you’ve never seen yourself.” This perspective suggests that ayahuasca offers a heightened state of awareness, allowing individuals to confront and integrate different aspects of their psyche.

However, the journey with psychedelics is not always straightforward. The King Richard star also admitted to having encountered challenging experiences with ayahuasca. He recounted one particularly harrowing session that he described as “the individual most hellish psychological experience of my life.”

“I’m drinking, I’m sitting there, and then all of a sudden, it’s like I start seeing all of my money flying away and my house is flying away and my career is gone away,” he recalled. “I’m trying to grab for my money and my career and my whole life is getting destroyed.” This vivid description illustrates the raw and confronting nature of some ayahuasca experiences, where deep-seated anxieties and fears can be brought to the surface for processing.

Celebrity Journeys with Ayahuasca

Beyond Amstell and Smith, other prominent figures have also shared their encounters with ayahuasca. The on-again, off-again couple Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly travelled to Costa Rica to participate in a three-day ceremony. Fox, known for her roles in the Transformers franchise, described her experience as “hellish,” recounting a profound feeling of having “go[ne] to hell for eternity” on the second night of the ceremony. These varied accounts highlight the deeply personal and unpredictable nature of these powerful psychedelic experiences.

The growing willingness of public figures to discuss their use of substances like ayahuasca reflects a broader societal shift in attitudes towards mental health and alternative healing modalities. While these experiences can be challenging, they often lead to significant personal growth, self-discovery, and a greater sense of emotional well-being, as exemplified by Simon Amstell’s journey towards self-acceptance.
