A Long-Awaited Homecoming: Labour MEP’s Daughter Finally Home After Gruelling Journey
A palpable sense of relief and overwhelming joy has swept through the family of Labour MEP Aodhán Ó Riordáin and his partner Nicola Byrne, as their newborn daughter, Róisín, has finally made it home after a harrowing few weeks. The premature arrival of their little girl, born at just 26 weeks and five days, marked the beginning of an intensely challenging period for the couple and their existing children.
Róisín entered the world on December 14th, arriving significantly earlier than anticipated. The situation became critical when Nicola’s waters broke prematurely at 18 weeks, followed by a traumatic and extensive bleed at 22 weeks. These early complications cast a dark shadow of uncertainty, forcing the couple to confront the unthinkable.
In an emotional social media post, Aodhán shared the profound significance of this homecoming. He recounted the immense relief of finally having Róisín safe in their arms, surrounded by her loving sisters. “The moment we’ve craved for months,” he wrote, describing Róisín’s journey as “torturous.” He bravely revealed the depth of their fear, admitting that at one point, he began composing his daughter’s eulogy while on a flight home.
“I had started it ‘Dear Róisín’,” he explained, detailing how he wrote to his unborn daughter, telling her about the sisters who would watch over her from above, and urging her to keep an eye on her parents too. This poignant act highlights the extreme emotional toll and the desperate preparations made for the worst-case scenario.
Róisín’s birth at 26 weeks and five days meant she weighed a mere kilogram. The immediate aftermath of her birth was a blur of urgent medical attention, with Róisín being rushed away for critical care as soon as she arrived.

“98 days ago she was born. At 26 weeks, five days and weighing one kilo,” Aodhán stated, underscoring the monumental battle Róisín has faced every single day since her arrival. The sheer resilience of this tiny infant, against astronomical odds, has been a source of immense strength for the family.
The couple expressed their profound gratitude to their extensive network of friends and family for their unwavering support throughout this incredibly difficult period. “We can never thank friends and family enough for sticking with us through the darkest of days,” Aodhán conveyed.
Furthermore, the family extended their deepest appreciation to the dedicated medical staff at the Rotunda and the Coombe Hospitals. Their expertise and tireless efforts were instrumental in keeping Róisín alive when the chances of survival were slim. “The staff of the Rotunda and the Coombe can never be repaid for keeping Róisín alive when the odds were stacked against her,” he emphasised.
Amidst their own joy, the family remains acutely aware of the pain experienced by others. They acknowledged that their journey, while ending in a homecoming, is not the outcome for all families. “We can’t help but think of families whose pregnancy hasn’t ended with a homecoming,” Aodhán said, promising to address advocacy and support for those who have endured unimaginable grief at a later stage.
The significance of March 22nd has been irrevocably transformed for the Ó Riordáin-Byrne family. It will forever be remembered as “Sister Day” for Róisín and her two sisters. This day marks the anniversary of the first time all three sisters were together, a powerful symbol of their bond and shared journey.
The overwhelming wave of well wishes and encouragement from the public has not gone unnoticed. Aodhán concluded his heartfelt message by expressing his sincere appreciation for all the messages and support received. He vowed to share these with Róisín someday, a testament to the collective love and hope that surrounded their family during their darkest hours. This reunion signifies not just a homecoming, but a victory of love, resilience, and extraordinary medical care.
