The District of Tumbler Ridge, a close-knit community of approximately 2,400 residents, released a statement expressing their deep sorrow. “Our hearts are with all those affected, and we recognise that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared, and overwhelmed.” In response to the distressing incident, both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Elementary Schools have been closed for the remainder of the week, providing a period of respite and allowing for investigations to proceed unimpeded.
Tumbler Ridge, located about 736 miles north of Vancouver, is a remote district municipality. The secondary school typically caters to 175 students in grades 7 through 12.
An earlier emergency alert, which had advised residents to shelter in place, was lifted at 5:45 pm local time, signalling that the immediate threat had passed, though the emotional toll on the community is far from over.
David Eby, the Premier of British Columbia, conveyed his sympathies on social media. “Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones,” he wrote. “Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.”
