Arne Slot Addresses Criticism After Salah Ends Contract

Arne Slot Reflects on Mohamed Salah’s Departure

Arne Slot, the current head coach of Liverpool, has expressed that he has no regrets regarding his management of Mohamed Salah, a player often described as ‘one of a kind.’ The Egyptian forward’s decision to leave the club has been linked to a reported fallout between him and Slot. However, Slot maintains that there is no direct connection between their relationship and Salah’s departure.

Salah is set to begin his farewell tour with a match against Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final. This comes after he announced his impending exit from the club last week. The 33-year-old has terminated the final season of his contract at Anfield, opting to leave on a free transfer just one year after signing a two-year deal worth £400,000 per week. Many have suggested that a public disagreement with Slot, where Salah stated that the pair had ‘no relationship,’ played a role in his decision to leave.

When asked if he was satisfied with how he handled the situation, Slot responded: ‘Yes. I look back at this season thinking that I made a few decisions that could have been better but I’m not talking about this specific thing with Mo.’

‘I don’t regret many things I did during a little longer than one-and-a-half years together. Again, the assumption that if he’s not playing that he wants to leave – that’s the assumption being made – then he would have left one-and-a-half years ago.’

Slot also recalled an instance when Salah was not playing during a match against West Ham. He noted that Salah did not decide to leave the club at that time. ‘The assumption is if you don’t play these games and all of a sudden want to leave, it is an assumption and maybe it is true or maybe it isn’t,’ he added.

‘But history has shown that he did not do that previously and had a great season after that.’

Preparing for the Future

Slot, who will lead his team to France for a crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, mentioned that succession planning has already begun. He is involved in discussions about the future of the team, though he admits replacing a player of Salah’s caliber will be challenging.

‘We are not starting to work on it now because we are constantly working on where we can improve,’ said the head coach. ‘There is not a lot talked about this but it is 88 minutes that Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were together on the pitch together.’

‘So let’s first find out and work out how that works together and that can give us so much more. It is never one player who can replace Mo. Otherwise there would be 15 or 20 Mos and he is one of a kind, which is why he is so special.’

‘You cannot find a Mo replacement. Maybe you can but he would not be available (to buy at a realistic fee).’
