Arne Slot Reflects on Mohamed Salah’s Departure
Arne Slot, the current head coach of Liverpool, has expressed that he has no regrets regarding his management of Mohamed Salah, a player he describes as “one of a kind.” The Egyptian forward’s decision to leave the club has been linked to a reported fallout between him and Slot, though the coach maintains that this was not the primary reason for Salah’s departure.
Salah is currently embarking on a farewell tour, with his final appearance for Liverpool coming against Manchester City in an FA Cup quarter-final. This follows his announcement last week that he will be leaving the club on a free transfer after just one season of a two-year contract signed at a rate of £400,000 per week. Many have speculated that a public disagreement between Salah and Slot played a role in his decision to move on.
However, when asked if he was satisfied with his actions during their time working together, Slot responded: “Yes. I look back at this season thinking that I made a few decisions that could have been better, but I’m not talking about this specific thing with Mo.”
He added: “I don’t regret many things I did during a little longer than one-and-a-half years together. Again, the assumption that if he’s not playing that he wants to leave – that’s the assumption being made – then he would have left one-and-a-half years ago.”
Slot also referenced a previous incident involving Salah and former manager Jurgen Klopp, where there was a reported fallout. He recalled the match against West Ham, where Salah wasn’t playing, and noted that he didn’t decide to leave at that time.
“
But history has shown that he did not do that previously and had a great season after that.”
Preparing for the Future
Despite the loss of Salah, Slot is already considering the future of the team. He confirmed that succession planning has begun and that he is involved in these discussions. However, he admitted that replacing a player of Salah’s caliber will be a significant challenge.
“We are not starting to work on it now because we are constantly working on where we can improve,” said the head coach. “There is not a lot talked about this, but it is 88 minutes that Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were together on the pitch together. So let’s first find out and work out how that works together and that can give us so much more.”
Slot emphasized that no single player can replace Salah, stating: “It is never one player who can replace Mo. Otherwise there would be 15 or 20 Mos and he is one of a kind, which is why he is so special.”
He continued: “You cannot find a Mo replacement. Maybe you can, but he would not be available (to buy at a realistic fee).”
Looking Ahead
As Liverpool prepares for its upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, the focus remains on adapting to life without Salah. While the team will need to adjust, Slot is confident that the squad has the potential to continue performing at a high level.
The transition will not be easy, but with careful planning and development, the club aims to maintain its competitive edge. As Slot puts it, “Mohamed Salah is a unique talent, and while we will miss him, we are committed to building a strong and cohesive team moving forward.”
