Arsenal’s Injury Crisis Eases as Declan Rice Returns to Training
Arsenal have received a significant boost in their ongoing injury crisis with Declan Rice returning to training ahead of their crucial Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon. This development comes as the club continues to manage a series of injuries that have impacted their squad in recent weeks.
Rice was among several Gunners players who opted out of international duty over the past fortnight, which also led to him missing his team’s FA Cup defeat by Southampton. Alongside him, players such as William Saliba, Noni Madueke, and Martin Odegaard have all faced injury concerns recently. Gabriel, too, had to leave the field during a match due to a minor issue, but he has since been seen training on Monday.
Despite these challenges, there are signs of recovery within the squad. Saliba, Madueke, and Odegaard have all returned to action after their respective setbacks, offering some relief to manager Mikel Arteta. However, not all players are back in full fitness. Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze, and Piero Hincapie remain uncertain for the upcoming match against Sporting in Portugal on Tuesday.
Saka and Rice both initially joined the England squad during the international break but withdrew shortly after due to discomfort. While Saka may not feature in the game, Rice could still play a role, potentially joining Martin Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard in midfield. This trio could be key to Arsenal’s chances of progressing in one of the two competitions they still have a realistic shot at winning this season.

Arteta has praised Rice’s commitment and performance despite the ongoing challenges. He said last week: “Yeah, he’s been phenomenal because that’s been going on for a while, and the fact that he’s been able to perform and consistently commit to the team in that manner. He talks about how much he wants to play for us and how much he wants to win, and that’s great to see.”
Jurrien Timber is still dealing with discomfort from a hip injury sustained during the match against Everton. Arteta mentioned that Timber could have been fit for the Southampton clash, but the player is still not fully recovered. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze remains out, and Arteta admitted he cannot predict when the player will return. He said: “Ebz is out. With Ebz I cannot put a finger (on a return date) because I don’t know, because he’s a special character.”
A Busy Season Run-In
Arsenal’s schedule has become more manageable following their unexpected defeat by Championship side Southampton at the weekend. Despite this setback, the team remains nine points clear at the top of the Premier League with seven games left to play. Their focus now shifts to the Champions League, where they aim to secure progression and maintain their chances in multiple competitions.
As the season enters its final stretch, the return of key players like Rice will be crucial for Arsenal’s ambitions. The club is navigating a challenging period, but with several players coming back into form, there is hope for a strong finish to the campaign.
