Arsenal’s Gyokeres bizarrely blames stadium for costly error

A Critical Miss and a Challenging Match for Arsenal

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has pointed to the “dry pitch” as a factor in his missed opportunity during the team’s 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth. The match, which saw Gyokeres miss several key chances, highlighted the struggles of Mikel Arteta’s side as they continue to face challenges in their pursuit of the Premier League title.

Gyokeres had a chance to score from close range late in the game when the ball fell to him with goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic seemingly out of position. However, he fired over the bar instead of capitalizing on the situation. In stoppage time, he also missed two more clear opportunities, including a 92nd-minute header that went wide of the post and another chance just a minute later.

The loss marked Arsenal’s third defeat in four games, raising concerns about their title hopes. Despite holding a nine-point lead over Manchester City, the Gunners’ northern rivals have two games in hand and are set to host them at the Etihad Stadium next week.

Gyokeres, who scored a penalty for the Gunners, acknowledged the missed chances and attributed part of the issue to the pitch conditions. He told the BBC: “We had some okay chances in the end. The pitch was maybe a bit dry there to be honest, so that didn’t help. We all need to do better and take our chances.”

Gyokeres emphasized the importance of moving forward after the defeat. “We don’t need to get too stuck on what happened today. We need to look forward, be positive, and look forward to the games.”

Since the start of the year, Gyokeres has been a key player for Arsenal, scoring 18 goals across all competitions. His performance has improved significantly since joining the club in a £64 million deal from Sporting Lisbon last summer. Although he faced criticism for a slow start, he has now scored 11 goals in 2026, silencing many of his critics.

However, the match against Bournemouth revealed some inconsistencies. Arsenal only managed three shots on target, with Gyokeres’ penalty being the only goal that kept them in the game. The first-half goal came from Eli Junior Kroupi, who put Andoni Iraola’s side ahead. Bournemouth, who remain unbeaten in 12 Premier League matches, extended their club record with this victory.

Gyokeres equalized from the penalty spot before halftime, but Alex Scott’s 74th-minute goal sealed the win for Bournemouth. The loss left some fans frustrated, with some leaving the stadium before full time and others remaining to boo the team.

This defeat could have significant implications for Arsenal’s bid to win their first Premier League title since 2004. While their league form has generally been strong—winning four games in a row prior to this match—their performances have become more labored, and their results in other competitions have not been convincing.

The 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final last month has raised questions about how both teams will handle the pressure of the run-in. Additionally, their exit from the FA Cup quarter-finals against Southampton has added to the concerns, despite the Championship club’s impressive form and previous success in eliminating Fulham from the competition.
