Brad Arthur’s Impact on Rugby League
Brad Arthur has once again proven his ability to transform rugby league clubs, with his successful revival of Leeds leading them to the top of the Super League table. Less than 18 months after taking over at Headingley, Arthur’s Rhinos are now leading the ladder this late in the season for the first time since 2020. This achievement highlights Arthur’s coaching prowess and his knack for turning struggling teams into competitive forces.
Arthur recently missed out on the PNG Chiefs job, which was instead awarded to Willie Peters as the expansion side’s first NRL coach. However, the former Parramatta mentor is still seen as a strong candidate for a return to the NRL, as his contract with Leeds is set to expire at the end of 2026. Whether he will make a return to the NRL remains uncertain, but there is speculation that he could be considered for a position at Manly following the dismissal of Anthony Seibold.
The topic of Seibold’s replacement was discussed at a recent Manly board meeting, but the club is also keen to give interim coach Kieran Foran an opportunity to prove himself. Foran has made a strong impression on Manly officials with his maturity and leadership, most notably demonstrated by a 52-18 victory over the Dolphins on Thursday night.

Manly has several challenging fixtures coming up, including matches against St George Illawarra, North Queensland, and Parramatta. These games provide Foran with the perfect chance to stake his claim for the permanent coaching role. Even if the club decides to go in a different direction, Foran will be given the opportunity to finish the season as the coach and will remain on the coaching staff in 2027.
Manly’s management has been clear about their preference for a coach with strong ties to the club. All eight of the Sea Eagles’ premierships have been won under a “Manly man” as head coach. Among the potential candidates, two-time Manly premiership winner Matt Ballin is currently considered the early favorite. Ballin has strong support from the club’s old boys and is believed to be interested in the role. The 42-year-old is currently working under Michael Maguire in Brisbane after previously serving in Manly’s coaching ranks.
Another potential candidate for the Manly coaching position is Brad Arthur. Arthur spent one year as an assistant coach at Manly in 2013, where he was so well-regarded that he later managed to attract players like Kieran Foran and Anthony Watmough to Parramatta. His record of transforming Parramatta from a struggling team into finalists and a Grand Final participant in 2022 is a significant asset. Although he left the Eels in 2024 due to the need for change, his success at Leeds has only increased his chances of returning to the NRL.
Even if Arthur does not secure the Manly job, he is likely to remain a strong contender for any other coaching openings in the NRL this year. His track record speaks for itself, and his experience in turning around struggling teams makes him a valuable asset for any club looking for a new direction.
Other Coaching Challenges in the NRL
North Queensland coach Todd Payten started the season under immense pressure but has managed to turn things around with back-to-back wins in rounds three and four. Meanwhile, St George Illawarra coach Shane Flanagan admitted this weekend that he needs more wins to keep his job. These developments highlight the challenges facing coaches across the league and the importance of consistent performance in maintaining their positions.
