A Difficult Season and a Bittersweet Farewell
Former India player Ravichandran Ashwin recently opened up about the emotional challenges he faced during his time with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His comments came after CSK suffered another loss to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 5, marking their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2026. This has raised concerns about whether the team will have another underwhelming season in the tournament.
Ashwin reflected on a difficult season with the five-time champions, which eventually led to his decision to retire from all formats of cricket. He chose to continue playing in overseas leagues instead, feeling that he could no longer contribute effectively to the Indian cricket team or CSK.
The veteran spinner described the experience as mentally draining. “I had a disappointing season with CSK last season. I could have played more, but I didn’t have the capacity to carry on,” he said. He admitted that the situation was painful and did not want to elaborate further. “It was mentally disturbing. I started in Chennai, and I decided to end it in Chennai. I took retirement as it would have put the team management under pressure over whether to keep me or release me.”
Ashwin also mentioned the financial implications of his decision. “CSK would have saved INR 10 crore if I had left. I am disappointed as I had expectations and hope,” he added.
Strategic Moves by Chennai Super Kings
In the recent mini auction, CSK made several strategic moves by investing in uncapped Indian players. Players like Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer joined the franchise for over INR 28 crore. These decisions were aimed at strengthening the team’s overall performance and ensuring competitiveness in the upcoming matches.
Despite these efforts, CSK’s batters are still struggling to complete the task. In their recent game against RCB, the team’s bowlers conceded 250 runs, highlighting the challenges they face in maintaining consistency.
Ashwin acknowledged RCB’s strength and expressed confidence in their performance. “I knew RCB are going to win because of their team strength. However, I was confident of seeing improvement from the CSK. RCB have warned everyone with the way they are playing at the moment,” he concluded.
Looking Ahead for Chennai Super Kings
With their current position at the bottom of the point table, CSK faces an uphill battle. They have already lost to Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Their next match is against Delhi Capitals on April 11, which will be crucial in determining their chances of making a comeback in the tournament.
For Ashwin, this period marks a significant chapter in his career. While he may no longer be part of the CSK squad, his contributions to the team and the sport remain invaluable. His decision to retire was not taken lightly, and he hopes that the team can find new ways to succeed without him.
As the tournament progresses, fans will be watching closely to see how CSK adapts and evolves. The journey ahead is uncertain, but with the right strategies and determination, there is always a chance for a revival.
