Aspinall Treatment: Not Injections, White’s Claim Contested

Tom Aspinall Undergoes Second Surgery for Serious Eye Injury, Contradicting UFC President’s Claims

Wigan, England – UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall has indeed undergone surgical treatment for a significant eye injury, a fact that directly contradicts recent statements made by UFC President Dana White. White had claimed that Aspinall was receiving injections rather than undergoing surgery. However, photographic evidence shared by Aspinall himself clearly depicts a second operation, as he continues his arduous recovery from an injury sustained during his bout with Ciryl Gane in October.

The intricacies of Aspinall’s medical situation have come to light following a press conference held on January 24th, where White made his assertions. Sources close to the situation have confirmed that Aspinall underwent an initial operation during the Christmas period. Contrary to White’s statements, there have been no injections administered, nor are any planned as part of his rehabilitation. This ongoing battle with the injury, caused by eye pokes from Ciryl Gane, has cast a shadow over his future fighting career and the status of his first undisputed title defence, which was unfortunately declared a no-contest in the opening round.

The abrupt and concerning conclusion to the main event at UFC 321, which saw Aspinall’s title defence end prematurely, also attracted scrutiny towards Dana White. At the time, White faced criticism for suggesting that Aspinall might have been unwilling to continue fighting. In reality, Aspinall was immediately transported to a hospital in Abu Dhabi, the location of the event, for urgent medical attention. His prospects for returning to the octagon remain uncertain.

Responding to inquiries about the 32-year-old’s recovery in January, White had commented, “Oh Jesus, don’t let me talk about Tom Aspinall’s eye. Apparently he’s going in for a second surgery, or just had it, or… and by surgery I mean injections. I have no idea. Get a quote from him. God f***ing forbid I say something about it.” This statement appeared to be a veiled reference to prior criticisms White had faced regarding his comments on fighter injuries.

Aspinall, however, appears to have taken White’s latest remarks in good humour. Presented with footage of White’s comments, the Wigan-born fighter shared a light-hearted response on his YouTube channel on January 25th. He quipped, “[This is] about me? I didn’t even fight last night! Is this Dana? Jeez. Catching strays, aren’t I? Catching strays in my own living room on a Sunday morning!”

Adding further clarity to the situation, Aspinall has now publicly shared photographs detailing his latest surgical procedure. These images were posted in collaboration with Optegra Eye Health Care, who provided a statement on Instagram: “After his highly publicised eye poke injury, Optegra’s expert team is proud to have supported MMA fighter and UFC Heavyweight Champion @TomAspinall. Over recent months we’ve been working closely with him on his recovery. Following his operation on both eyes we continue the journey to get Tom’s vision back to fighting fitness.”

The photographs offer a stark visual testament to the severity of the injury and the extensive medical intervention required.

Aspinall’s bout with Gane was a significant moment, marking his inaugural defence of the undisputed heavyweight championship. He had been elevated to this status following Jon Jones’s retirement from mixed martial arts and his subsequent relinquishing of the regular belt. Jones’s tenure as champion was marked by controversy. The former two-time light-heavyweight champion secured the vacant heavyweight title in March 2023. Aspinall then claimed the interim belt eight months later, while Jones was sidelined with an injury. Despite a period of 17 months where both fighters held championship belts concurrently, Jones reportedly refused to face Aspinall in a title unification bout.

In the interim, Aspinall made a notable decision to defend his interim belt, successfully retaining it by defeating Curtis Blaydes via knockout in July 2024. Later, in November of the same year, Jones made a long-awaited title defence against heavyweight legend Stipe Miocic, winning the bout only to announce his retirement as champion seven months thereafter. The current situation with Aspinall’s injury leaves the landscape of the UFC heavyweight division with considerable uncertainty.
