Aussie Champ Roasted: Boxing Legend’s Fiery Outburst

Boxing World in Turmoil: Opetaia’s Title Defence Sparks Fury, De La Hoya Weighs In

The boxing landscape is abuzz with controversy following Australian cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia’s recent victory over Brandon Glanton in Las Vegas. While Opetaia secured a win in the ring, the fight’s sanctioning by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) has ignited a firestorm, with legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya launching a scathing attack on Zuffa Boxing and its figurehead, Dana White, urging Opetaia to “wake up” before his career is “ruined.”

The crux of the issue lies in the IBF’s decision not to sanction the bout, stating that Opetaia would be stripped of his title if the fight proceeded. This announcement came as a shock to Opetaia and his team, who were under the impression that both the Zuffa belt and the IBF championship would be on the line. Opetaia’s manager, Mick Francis, revealed that days before the fight, there had been no communication from the IBF regarding their belt being contested.

It is understood that disagreements between the promoter and the sanctioning body stemmed from the classification of the Zuffa title. The IBF reportedly viewed it as a mere “trophy or token of recognition” rather than a legitimate championship belt. In response to this, Opetaia’s legal team has initiated action in an attempt to secure the IBF belt and preserve his aspirations of becoming an undisputed champion.

De La Hoya’s Fiery Accusations

The unfolding drama has provided fuel for Oscar De La Hoya’s ongoing war of words with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing. The former six-division world champion did not hold back in his criticism, directly addressing his followers and Opetaia.

“We all know the Zuffa belt is like a participation trophy given to a nine-year old at the end of a soccer game. It has the significance of a haemorrhoid on my f—in’ ass,” De La Hoya declared. He accused Zuffa of deception, stating, “Zuffa lied to everyone. The entire time, and poor Jai Opetaia suffered because of it.”

De La Hoya suggested that Opetaia and his team were misled by Zuffa, who likely promised unification opportunities that were never intended to materialise. “They probably signed Opetaia and told his entire team, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll let you unify.’ And of course, it wasn’t going to happen,” he explained. “So, instead of fighting for a belt that he loves, Jai was stuck fighting for absolutely nothing, against a guy that had zero championship experience. Of course he wants to fight for all the belts, everybody does. Nobody wants the piece of shit Zuffa belt they’re trying to push on us.”

Questionable Matchmaking and Ranking Controversies

De La Hoya also cast doubt on the opponent selection for Opetaia, labelling Brandon Glanton as a “plant” orchestrated by The Ring magazine. The Ring is now under the ownership of Turki Alalshikh, who is a partner with Dana White in Zuffa Boxing.

“His opponent Brandon Glanton was a plant by The Ring, who ranked him number 10 in the world in their made-up rankings,” De La Hoya asserted. He highlighted Glanton’s lack of championship experience, noting, “He had never even fought a championship round in his entire life, he was ranked number 15 by the IBF.”

De La Hoya continued his tirade against The Ring’s credibility, stating, “I’ve said it before, the Ring Magazine belt is officially dead. Its history and honour has been ruined by the biased propaganda and the clear agenda of those behind it.”

Legal Battles and Career Warnings

Adding another layer to the complex situation is Opetaia’s pending legal action against the IBF. The lawsuit alleges a “coordinated, industry-wide collusion” involving the IBF, the WBA, WBC, WBO, and Matchroom Boxing, aimed at causing financial and reputational damage to Opetaia.

De La Hoya further revealed, “To make matters worse for Jai Opetaia, a letter was sent to all organisations from his attorney yesterday, threatening legal action for not working with Zuffa.” He expressed scepticism about Opetaia’s choice of legal representation, given his Australian origins: “Jai is from a little tiny town in Australia, so what are the chances he knows and chooses an attorney in Las Vegas to represent him on this matter?”

His stern warning to the Australian champion was clear: “Jai, wake up before they ruin your career, brother. Fester [Dana White] is using you as a tool in all of this. Get the f— out of there.”

De La Hoya extended his caution to other boxers contemplating joining the new Zuffa league, warning, “You sign with Zuffa and you’ll be tricked into a bunch of shit, just like Jai Opetaia was.”

The Road Ahead for Opetaia and the Cruiserweight Division

The uncertainty surrounding Opetaia’s future is palpable. His planned bout against WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian is now in question, particularly without the IBF belt being a factor.

The boxing world’s attention will soon shift to the highly anticipated clash on May 3 between WBA and WBO champion Gilberto Ramirez and David Benavidez. Opetaia’s camp is reportedly holding out hope for a Benavidez victory, which could pave the way for a potential unification bout for all the major belts, a scenario Opetaia has long strived for.
