Aussie NBA Star’s Season Over After Lung Collapse Scare

Pistons Star Cade Cunningham Sidelined by Collapsed Lung Diagnosis

Detroit Pistons’ standout player, Cade Cunningham, is facing an extended absence from the court following a concerning health development. The 24-year-old guard, who has been a driving force for the team this season, was initially reported to have a lower back injury after exiting Tuesday night’s game against the Washington Wizards. However, further medical evaluations have revealed a more serious condition: a collapsed lung. This diagnosis will keep the MVP candidate sidelined for an unspecified period.

The exact moment Cunningham sustained the injury remains unclear. His departure from Tuesday’s game occurred after a hard fall in the first quarter. While attempting to recover a loose ball, the 2021 number one overall draft pick took a tumble to the court. Although he eventually got to his feet, he continued to play for a few more minutes before being substituted out with just under seven minutes remaining in the period.

Initially, the injury was attributed to back spasms. The subsequent diagnosis of a collapsed lung, or pneumothorax, has raised questions about a potential link between the two incidents, though this has not been confirmed.

Understanding a Collapsed Lung

A collapsed lung, medically termed pneumothorax, occurs when air infiltrates the pleural space – the area between the lung and the chest wall. This influx of air exerts pressure on the outside of the lung, causing it to deflate or collapse.

The symptoms of a collapsed lung can manifest suddenly and include:

  • Sharp chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

In more severe cases, a collapsed lung can be a life-threatening condition.

Impact on Cunningham’s Season and Awards

Cunningham has been delivering an impressive performance this season, averaging 25 points, 10 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game. In the limited minutes he played on Tuesday before his exit, he managed to score six points and grab two rebounds.

This injury also jeopardises Cunningham’s chances of qualifying for major NBA awards. To be eligible for accolades such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and All-NBA teams, players must participate in at least 65 regular season games. With 61 games played so far, Cunningham is now on the brink of falling short of this crucial criterion.

Signs of Optimism Amidst the Setback

Despite the concerning diagnosis, there are indications of cautious optimism regarding Cunningham’s return. NBA insider Shams Charania reported on ESPN’s “Get Up!” that Cunningham is dealing with a “mild” case of the collapsed lung.

Charania noted that the exact timeline for Cunningham’s return is still being determined by the Pistons’ medical staff. However, he added that a return for the postseason has not been ruled out.

“Could be a period of weeks,” Charania stated, acknowledging that the playoffs are approximately a month away. “There is some optimism that he’s going to be back for the playoffs, but this is a situation now, an injury that he’s going to be fighting, rehabbing. The Pistons, their doctors, their medical staff. They’re all going to work together to get more information in the next few days, as far as treatment and potential recovery here.”

Pistons’ Playoff Aspirations at Risk

Cunningham’s injury represents a significant blow to the Detroit Pistons, especially with just 14 regular season games remaining. The team currently holds a commanding 3.5-game lead atop the Eastern Conference standings, maintaining a strong position for the top seed. This lead is particularly crucial as they aim to fend off strong contenders like the Boston Celtics, who have recently seen the return of their star player, Jayson Tatum.

Cade Cunningham has been the linchpin of the Pistons’ success this season. His absence puts their narrow lead at risk, and the franchise will be desperately hoping for his swift recovery. The ultimate goal for Detroit is to have their star player back on the court in time for the NBA playoffs, as they strive to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2005. The coming days will be critical in determining the path forward for both Cunningham and the Pistons’ championship aspirations.
