Aussie Reds’ Freebie: PSG’s Wish Granted Amidst Lens Fury

PSG Gets Fixture Wish Granted, Ligue 1 Clash Postponed Amidst European Ambitions

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has successfully lobbied for the postponement of their pivotal Ligue 1 fixture against second-placed Lens. This decision, met with strong reservations from Lens, grants the Parisian giants more breathing room as they gear up for their crucial Champions League quarter-final encounter against Liverpool.

The original scheduling saw PSG’s journey to Lens, a team sitting just a single point adrift in the French top flight, slated for Saturday, April 11th. This date fell precariously between their Champions League quarter-final first leg in Paris and the return leg in Liverpool, presenting PSG with a daunting prospect of navigating three potentially season-defining matches in less than a week.

In response to this challenging fixture congestion, PSG formally requested a shift in their league meeting from the Ligue de Football Professionel (LFP). This move, however, did not sit well with Lens, who subsequently issued a strongly worded statement detailing their significant concerns.

Lens argued that the fixture schedule had been finalised and agreed upon as far back as March 6th. They expressed a “troubling sentiment” that the league was being “gradually relegated to the status of an adjustment variable at the whim of the European imperatives of some.” The club also highlighted that such a date change would disproportionately benefit PSG – undoubtedly the wealthiest and most influential club in the division – while simultaneously inconveniencing Lens by forcing a more congested playing schedule for their own team.

Despite Lens’s vehement opposition, the LFP ultimately opted to postpone the clash. This decision aligns with their stated strategic objective of bolstering the performance of French clubs in European competitions.

The LFP articulated its reasoning in a statement, asserting that these decisions were “in line with the board of directors’ clear strategic aim of enabling France to retain its fifth place in the Uefa coefficient rankings, which secures four places in the Uefa Champions League.”

The rescheduled match between PSG and Lens is now set to take place on May 13th, placing it as the penultimate fixture of the Ligue 1 season.

This is not the first instance of PSG benefiting from fixture adjustments for European commitments. Their earlier Champions League last-16 tie against Chelsea also saw a league match postponed. A fixture against Nantes, originally scheduled for the weekend between their European ties, was moved to facilitate their preparation. PSG went on to secure a commanding 8-2 aggregate victory in that tie.

Furthermore, Strasbourg’s league fixture against Brest, originally scheduled for Sunday, April 12th, has also been moved to May 13th. This adjustment is intended to aid Strasbourg in their preparations for their Conference League quarter-final clashes with Mainz.

Lens, in response to the postponement, released a statement on Thursday evening. “While expressing its disagreement with the unanimous decision of the LFP Board of Directors to postpone the match against Paris Saint-Germain, RC Lens acknowledges it responsibly, reaffirms its determination to pursue its sporting objectives, and specifies that ticketing arrangements will be communicated individually by email to each supporter.” This statement indicates a grudging acceptance of the LFP’s decision, while still maintaining their stance and assuring supporters that ticketing information will be provided directly.
