A Heartwarming Moment on BBC Breakfast
A touching moment unfolded on the BBC Breakfast show, where a guest shared an emotional story that left both the presenters and viewers deeply moved. The segment highlighted the incredible work of a toymaker who has dedicated his life to helping underprivileged children.
During Monday’s episode, Ben Thompson and Nina Warhurst welcomed Bill Houghton, a toymaker known for crafting handmade toys for children in need. Bill appeared on the Rise and Shine segment, where he sat on the iconic red sofa to discuss his charitable efforts.
Bill shared a heartfelt story about a young boy who came into a charity shop with his mother. He explained:
“There was a little lad that came into the charity shop, Maureen told me, she said we had a referral in. They don’t sell these, they give them to kids as referrals. He came in, this lady came in for stuff, clothes, what they normally get. She had a little lad with him, he was three-years-old, it was his birthday. They had no money or anything to buy him toys. So they gave him some of mine. I was made up. That’s why I do it.”
As he spoke, Bill became visibly emotional, breaking down in tears. He apologized, saying, “Sorry.” Nina reassured him, “No, that’s okay, it’s emotional. How did you feel?”
Bill continued: “I was in floods. How many kids are there in Wigan that don’t have anything? I made these. I have three boxes of these in my living room. I can’t put them in my garage, because that is where all my wood is!”
His dedication to his craft and the joy he brings to children has not gone unnoticed. Bill has become so well-known that even Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken an interest in his work.
Bill revealed: “Would you believe that? Sir Keir Starmer took time out of his day to send me a message! He said I was the best of British. He said I’d say ‘Thank you very much Bill, you’re the best of British.’ It’s absolutely blown my mind that.”
At the end of the interview, Bill again became emotional as he thanked the presenters, saying, “I can’t tell him how much that means to me.” Ben placed his hand on Bill’s shoulder to comfort him, and Bill added, “Sorry!”
Ben responded, “Don’t apologise. It is though, it’s fantastic,” a very emotional Bill said.
