Bears aim to stop Titans’ rising star

Rising Star on the Radar

The Gold Coast Titans are closely watching the re-signing of young talent Arama Hau as more clubs begin to take notice of his growing potential. Hau made a name for himself with a standout performance against the St George Illawarra Dragons, where he scored a double and effortlessly broke through the Red V defence.

Hau’s style of play draws comparisons to Sea Eagles enforcer Haumole Olakau’atu or former Titan David Fifita, who attended the same high school as him and served as a mentor during his development. His performances have not gone unnoticed, and now there are whispers that other clubs are interested in securing his services.

A Growing Talent

With his contract set to expire at the end of the year, there are reports that the Perth Bears are keen to attract Hau, especially after he has proven himself as a reliable 80-minute back rower following Fifita’s departure. Mal Meninga, who was previously in charge of the Titans pathways, played a significant role in Hau’s development and is reportedly looking to bring him to the west.

It is said that Hau was very close to leaving the Gold Coast for the Bears, but a last-minute change of heart might keep him in Queensland for now. Hau expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play the sport he loves, saying:

“I am pinching myself every day doing something I love. To get a win in front of everyone and show the Gold Coast what we’re working on is good. I have always backed myself against anyone. I am working on my repeat efforts, the basics and consistency in my game … and those (game-breaking) moments will come.”

Mentorship and Development

Hau went to the same school as David Fifita, who took him under his wing during his early career. This mentorship has helped shape Hau into the player he is today. He credits Fifita for his growth and is proud to be taking over from him.

Hau also had a loan stint with Featherstone Rovers in England in 2023 before returning to the Titans and making his NRL debut late in the 2024 season. With Fifita now at South Sydney, Hau has had the opportunity to showcase his abilities as a damaging 80-minute back rower, a role he has consistently filled this season.

Future Prospects

With financial incentives available, Meninga and the Bears could offer Hau a substantial pay rise to entice him to move to Western Australia. The goal would be to secure a starting second row spot alongside veteran Scott Sorensen.

As Hau continues to develop, the competition for his signature is likely to intensify. His performances on the field have already caught the attention of several clubs, and it remains to be seen which team will ultimately secure his services. For now, the Gold Coast Titans are hoping to retain one of their most promising young talents.
