A New Take on a Classic
Bell Shakespeare is set to surprise and delight audiences with its latest production, Mackenzie, a bold and unconventional reimagining of Macbeth. This innovative take on the classic play is not for the faint-hearted, as it introduces a completely new perspective that blends dark themes with campy humor and satire.
What Makes Mackenzie Unique?
The idea behind Mackenzie is both imaginative and thought-provoking. It poses an intriguing question: what if Macbeth was actually a 13-year-old child star at the peak of early 2000s TV fame? And what if Lady Macbeth was her ruthless stage mother? This twist brings a fresh and modern lens to one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, making it accessible and relevant to today’s audience.
The Creative Mind Behind the Play
The creative force behind Mackenzie is Yve Blake, a multi-award-winning playwright and composer known for her work on the cult musical Fangirls. Her unique vision for this production includes five original songs and a “very specific 2006 energy” that captures the essence of the early 2000s. Blake describes the idea as coming to her “like a fever dream — like Macbeth’s witches turning up,” driven by her long-standing interest in the darker aspects of child stardom.
The Cast and Crew
The production features a stellar cast, including Kimberley Hodgson, who has previously appeared in Miss Saigon and Fangirls, in the lead role of Mackenzie. Nikki Britton, a celebrated comedian known for her roles in Deadloch and How to Stay Married, plays the character of Ruth, Mackenzie’s ambitious stage mother. Other notable cast members include Ryan Gonzalez from Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Billie Palin, Anusha Thomas from Hamilton, and Jane Watt.
The direction is handled by Virginia Gay, an accomplished actress, writer, and former Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. She praises Blake’s writing as “joyful, pop-soaked and completely approachable,” highlighting the play’s ability to engage and entertain audiences of all backgrounds.
A Production Full of Energy
Mackenzie retains the core elements of Macbeth while infusing them with a vibrant, modern twist. The original story’s most compelling moments are preserved, but they are now wrapped in sequins and a Disney Channel aesthetic, creating a visually stunning and entertaining experience.
Where to See It
The play will debut in Sydney at The Neilson Nutshell, Pier 2/3, from June 11 to July 18. Following its run in Sydney, Mackenzie will move to Arts Centre Melbourne from July 24 to August 9. This is a must-see event for anyone interested in Shakespeare, fans of Fangirls, or simply those who have strong opinions about stage mums.
Final Thoughts
With its blend of humor, drama, and modern flair, Mackenzie promises to be a standout production that challenges traditional interpretations of Shakespearean classics. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the Bard or just looking for a fun and engaging night out, this play is sure to leave a lasting impression.
