Gold Coast Boosts Cultural Profile with Brisbane Arts Appointment

New Leadership for HOTA

John Kotzas, AM, has been appointed as the head of arts and culture at Experience Gold Coast, marking a significant move in the region’s cultural landscape. Kotzas, who served as the chief executive of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) for 15 years, will take over from Yarmila Alfonzetti on May 27, 2026. His new role involves overseeing the Gold Coast’s cultural precinct, HOTA, Home of the Arts, located in Surfers Paradise.

HOTA, which was established in 2018 through the rebranding of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, has become a prominent cultural hub. The launch of its Outdoor Stage next to Evandale Lake marked a pivotal moment in the area’s artistic development. In 2021, the iconic $60.5 million HOTA Gallery building opened, becoming the largest art gallery in Australia outside a capital city.

The HOTA precinct is known for hosting a wide range of events, including major art exhibitions, theatre performances, film screenings, comedy shows, music events, festivals, and markets. One of its most notable annual events is the AACTA Awards, Australia’s equivalent of the Oscars, held each February.

Kotzas expressed his excitement about joining Experience Gold Coast during a period of significant momentum for the arts in the region, especially with the upcoming Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

“HOTA is the heartbeat of the city’s cultural offering, and I want locals to really connect and own this amazing precinct, but at the same time continue to grow national and international visitation,” Kotzas said.

Born in Innisfail, Kotzas began his career as a teacher at Brisbane State High School before joining QPAC in 1989 as an education officer. He spent 35 years at QPAC before leaving in 2024. In 2021, he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the arts.

Experience Gold Coast chief executive John Warn welcomed Kotzas’ appointment, describing it as an exciting new chapter for the Gold Coast.

“I am so excited to see what direction John takes HOTA, and am confident he’ll continue to elevate our city’s profile as a leading arts and cultural destination nationally and grow its global reputation,” Warn said.

Experience Gold Coast serves as the peak destination marketing organisation and economic development body for the Gold Coast. It plays a crucial role in driving the region’s $8 billion visitor economy.
