The Evolution of Beat ’em Up Games
The beat ’em up genre has long been a staple of arcade gaming, offering players simple mechanics, satisfying action, and the thrill of fighting through waves of enemies. From the 1990s classics to modern masterpieces, these games have left an indelible mark on the gaming world. Here’s a look at some of the greatest brawlers of all time.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (1993)
Imagine driving a Cadillac while roaming through a dystopian world where dinosaurs coexist with you. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is a critically acclaimed beat ’em up game developed by Capcom. It was inspired by the Xenozoic Tales comic series and features four characters: Jack, Hannah, Mustafa, and Mess. The game offers fast-paced combat and a variety of firearms, with the option to play up to three players simultaneously. Although it never received a port, it remains a gem to this date.

The Simpsons Arcade Game (1991)
The Simpsons is a cooperative beat ’em up that allows up to four players to control the Simpson family as they go on a rescue mission to save Maggie from Mr. Burns and Smithers. Players can choose from four characters: Homer, Lisa, Bart, and Marge. Homer can punch and kick, Lisa can dodge and jump well, Bart skateboards, and Marge literally swings a vacuum at enemies. The game perfectly captures the show’s humor and visual style.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (1991)
In the 90s, Konami was the undisputed king of arcade games, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is a prime example of that. Players take on the role of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael as they battle iconic bosses like the Shredder and Bebop. The game was later re-released as a 3D remake but was eventually delisted from Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. It is lauded for its intensifying music, fast-paced gameplay, and vibrant graphics.
Yakuza 0 (2015)
A modern beat ’em up game, Yakuza 0 is a prequel to the Yakuza series. Set in Tokyo and Osaka in 1988, players follow young Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima as they fight criminals. The game features a deep narrative and over 100 side missions, showcasing the trademark humor-style NPCs of the Yakuza franchise.

Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Alien vs. Predator is widely considered one of the finest games Capcom ever produced. It is a 2 or 3-player co-op game where players choose from four characters: Major Dutch Schaefer, Lieutenant Linn Kurosawa, Predator Warrior, and Predator Hunter. The game involves fighting Xenomorph aliens to save the world, with flashy combos making it a top-tier title.
The Punisher (1993)
This Marvel character has a dedicated fanbase, and The Punisher arcade brawler justifies the character’s popularity. Players take on the role of Frank Castle or a young Nick Fury as they fight through six levels to defeat Kingpin. The collaboration between Capcom and Marvel proved to be lethal, with gameplay featuring fatal-looking combat where enemies fly everywhere with the hit of a bullet.
Tekken 3: Force Mode (1997)
Although not a full game itself, Tekken Force is a side-scrolling beat ’em up mini-game mode that beautifully portrays the Tekken theme. Players go through four distinct stages in various areas, defeating Mishima Corporation soldiers and facing bosses at each stage. Defeating the mode four times grants access to the Doctor Bosconovitch character.

Double Dragon II: The Revenge (1988)
This side-scrolling sequel by Technōs Japan lets players control brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee as they fight the Black Warriors gang to avenge Marian’s death. The game features the “So-Setsu-Ken” martial arts style and includes weapons such as chains and shovels.
Streets of Rage 2 (1992)
Streets of Rage is a beat ’em up franchise that set the tone for the entire genre. Players experience tight combat mechanics while enjoying the legendary techno soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. Characters include Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, Max Thunder, and Eddie “Skate” Hunter. The game also features a “Dual” mode for two players.
Streets of Rage 4 (2020)
Streets of Rage 4 is a revival of the Sega trilogy by Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games. It expands on the original games with modes like Story Mode, Stage Select, Arcade Mode, Boss Rush, and Battle Mode. The game features hand-drawn visuals and music from Olivier Derivier and series composers like Yuzo Koshiro.
Whether you’re throwing punches in gritty city streets or fantasy realms, these legendary brawlers define the timeless joy of the beat ’em up genre.
