North Melbourne’s Historic Comeback
North Melbourne celebrated a significant victory in their Alastair Clarkson AFL era, marking the biggest win of his coaching tenure. The Kangaroos staged a remarkable second-half comeback in a thrilling match against Gold Coast, ultimately securing a six-point win.
The game was a nail-biter, with North never leading until Cam Zurhaar kicked a goal just after the final siren at Marvel Stadium. This decisive moment sealed a 17.9 (111) to 16.9 (105) victory for the Kangaroos.
After several near-misses this season and a disappointing loss to Adelaide last week, this win is a major achievement for the emerging Kangaroos. It serves as a testament to their hard work and determination.

Clarkson, who has been the coach of North since 2022, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. He said, “I’m so rapt for the club and certainly the playing group. I’m just so pleased that we were able to find a way and continue to have belief.”
He highlighted that the team has been competing much better this season but hasn’t quite managed to secure wins against high-quality opponents. “For us to get that scalp was a bit of justification for a lot of hard work that’s been done. But we know we’re not there yet,” he added.
A Disappointing Performance from Gold Coast
In contrast, Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick was visibly disappointed with his team’s performance. He criticized the decision to stop attacking with about 10 minutes left in the game, which ultimately cost them the match.

Gold Coast started strong, kicking the first three goals of the game and leading by 43 points late in the second term. Hardwick noted, “If you stop playing offensively – there’s only one side trying to attack – you’re on the back foot.” He attributed the team’s struggles to factors such as fatigue, both mental and physical.
“The worst thing about it is we have to sit on that loss for nigh-on two weeks,” he said.
Upcoming Challenges for Both Teams
Both North and Gold Coast have byes next weekend ahead of crucial clashes. North will face Fremantle in Bunbury, while Gold Coast will take on reigning premiers Brisbane.

Despite coming off two wins in Darwin, Gold Coast has a history of struggling immediately after their Top End games. Clarkson ensured his players were aware of this challenge, especially after they managed to kick four goals to one in the third term to put themselves back in the game.
“We mentioned it at three-quarter time … maybe these guys might be tired from Darwin, who knows,” he said. “We just knew if we continued to play our method, we’d give ourselves a chance.”
Clarkson noted that much of North’s strategy involved stacking up in the first half but conceded five goals from centre-square ball-ups, which he described as “world-record pace.” As a result, several adjustments were made at the long break, including moving Zurhaar from defense back into attack and placing Colby McKercher in half-back.
Key Moments and Player Performances
Zurhaar played a pivotal role in the victory, and he was mobbed by teammates after scoring the winning goal. In a game marred by contentious umpiring decisions, Oscar Adams gave away an obvious free with seconds left, setting up Zurhaar for his triumph.
“They got the decision right, the most important one … we take that and move on,” Clarkson said with a chuckle.
Luke Davies-Uniacke, North’s standout player, scored from a set shot with a minute left to tie the scores. Although the Suns won the crucial center clearance, the Kangaroos rebounded off half-back. A long ball found Zurhaar deep in attack, and Adams was penalized.

Jack Darling kicked three goals for North, while Jed Walter did the same for Gold Coast. North’s Jy Simpkin and star Suns midfielders Noah Anderson, Christian Petracca, and Matt Rowell all stood out. Suns key defender Sam Collins was again outstanding.
