Bond Contenders Spotted as Franchise Gears Up for New Era
London’s West End buzzed with anticipation last Thursday evening as two of the most talked-about actors in contention for the iconic James Bond role made a joint appearance at a film premiere. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James were both in attendance for the launch of their new movie, Fuze, at the Odeon West End, just ahead of its official UK release on April 3rd. The British actors are currently leading a strong field of eligible stars vying to embody the seventh iteration of the debonair secret agent, a role left vacant since Daniel Craig’s departure five years ago.
The two leading men, impeccably dressed, mingled and posed for photographers outside the central London venue. Their presence also drew the attention of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, a key figure in the new chapter of the Bond franchise. Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022, the tech giant secured full creative control over the 007 franchise through an agreement with Barbara and Michael Broccoli. The Broccoli siblings have been at the helm of the franchise since 1995, inheriting the reins of their father, Albert R. Broccoli’s, Eon Productions.

The deal between Amazon and the Broccoli family, finalised in March 2025, was reportedly a significant financial undertaking, with rumours suggesting it exceeded $1 billion, though specific terms remain undisclosed. This acquisition has fuelled intense speculation about the future direction of the Bond films and, crucially, who will step into the tuxedo. Both Taylor-Johnson and James have been consistently named as frontrunners by industry insiders.
The new ownership has naturally led to considerable conjecture about where Amazon might steer the beloved franchise. James Bond has a long history with video game adaptations, dating back to the 1980s. These early iterations ranged from straightforward shooting games to text-based adventures where players dictated the spy’s actions through typed commands.
Location, Location, Location: A New Bond Setting?
Amazon executives are reportedly exploring potential filming locations for the highly anticipated new Bond film, with industry experts predicting a release at the end of next year or in 2027. A filming ban currently in effect in central London is prompting a search for alternative settings. According to reports, Liverpool is emerging as a strong contender.
An insider revealed that this potential shift might not sit well with all Bond purists, who already harbour concerns about Amazon’s influence potentially leading to significant changes within the franchise. However, the source highlighted Liverpool’s established reputation as a versatile filming hub, noting its appearances in major productions such as The Batman, Captain America, and the Harry Potter series, often standing in for various international cities. This doesn’t necessarily mean the narrative will be set in Liverpool itself, but eagle-eyed residents of Merseyside will undoubtedly recognise their city’s distinctive backdrop.

Navigating the Future of 007
The transfer of ‘creative control’ of the James Bond franchise to Amazon Prime has understandably raised fan anxieties, with some fearing the beloved films could be diluted by an influx of spin-offs, drawing comparisons to the extensive Star Wars universe. This move follows Amazon’s strategic acquisition of MGM Studios in 2022 as part of its broader media expansion. While the acquisition granted Amazon distribution rights to the 007 franchise, creative control was initially retained by the Broccoli family. However, the company is understood to be fast-tracking the production of the new film, having invested a reported $1 billion to regain this creative oversight from the Broccoli family.
Current indications suggest that the upcoming film will avoid certain common sequel tropes. There are no plans to explain how the agent has survived subsequent events, nor is there any intention to explore a multiverse of Bonds or to revert to a retro, 1960s-era aesthetic. While Barbara Broccoli was reportedly a proponent of Aaron Taylor-Johnson for the role, and he was once considered the frontrunner, producers like Heyman and Pascal are likely to have their own vision for selecting the next 007. The industry is abuzz with anticipation as this new chapter for James Bond unfolds.
