Britain’s Got Talent Hits Pause Button This Weekend Amidst Schedule Shake-Up
Fans of the much-loved talent competition, Britain’s Got Talent, will have to wait a little longer to catch the latest auditions as the show has been temporarily pulled from screens this weekend. The decision comes as ITV announces a schedule shake-up, with live Six Nations rugby coverage taking centre stage.
The popular series, now in its 19th season, has so far delivered three weeks of captivating auditions. However, the upcoming Saturday episode has been removed to accommodate the sporting event. The live rugby match, featuring France against England, is set to broadcast on ITV1 starting at 7:20pm, with kick-off at 8:10pm, the very time Britain’s Got Talent would typically air.

Consequently, viewers can expect the next installment of Britain’s Got Talent to grace their screens on Saturday, March 21st.

This scheduling adjustment occurs against the backdrop of a significant, albeit controversial, development for the show. Britain’s Got Talent has reportedly secured a substantial £120 million deal with ITV, extending its run until 2028. This renewal comes despite a noticeable decline in traditional viewing figures. While the show’s debut nearly two decades ago attracted a massive 10 million viewers, the most recent launch episode drew just 3 million, marking its lowest ever premiere audience. The subsequent episode saw a further dip, with an estimated 100,000 fewer viewers tuning in.
Despite these concerning ratings, Simon Cowell and production partners Fremantle have committed to a new contract, ensuring the long-running talent show will continue past its 20th anniversary next year. The agreement also signals the return of Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions, a special format where top acts from the global Got Talent franchise compete against each other. The last Champions special was held in 2019, with dancers Twist and Pulse emerging victorious at Wembley Arena.
Sources suggest that this extended commitment is a strong vote of confidence in the show’s enduring appeal, with TV executives reportedly looking beyond linear viewing figures. While some programmes have seen a decline in live viewership without compensatory gains in streaming or on digital platforms, Britain’s Got Talent has reportedly experienced a surge in engagement on platforms such as YouTube.
Judges and Potential New Talent
It is widely anticipated that Simon Cowell will be joined by his fellow judges Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and newcomer KSI for the upcoming series. This esteemed panel will be tasked with discovering the next wave of extraordinary talent.
The recent episodes have already showcased some truly memorable moments, including a contestant returning for her fourth audition. Katherine O’Malley, who first appeared in 2018 with her husband Joe, made a dramatic comeback this year. Dressed as a witch, she surprised the judges with her powerful rendition of “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked.

Katherine’s journey on the show has been a unique one. Her previous auditions with her husband Joe saw them perform as various Disney characters, including Belle and the Beast, Elsa and Olaf, and Ariel and Prince Eric. This time, encouraged by Amanda Holden to pursue a solo career, Katherine delivered a performance that impressed Simon, Amanda, and KSI, securing her a place in the next round.

The judges’ decision to send Katherine through highlights the show’s commitment to fostering individual talent, even when it means a change in dynamic for established duos. Joe, Katherine’s husband, expressed his full support from the audience, stating that it was her time to shine.
The competition remains fierce, with Britain’s Got Talent facing stiff competition in the ratings. Recently, BBC’s Michael McIntyre’s Big Show drew in 3.5 million viewers, surpassing Britain’s Got Talent‘s 3 million for one episode, while Gladiators also performed strongly. However, a Britain’s Got Talent spokesperson pointed to the significant digital reach of the show, noting that contestant content from a single episode generated 14.5 million views online, with a substantial portion attributed to one contestant alone.
Britain’s Got Talent continues to air on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
