Alleged Altercation Between Justin Bieber and Usher at Oscars Afterparty
Reports have surfaced suggesting a heated exchange occurred between Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber and his former mentor, R&B legend Usher, at a high-profile Oscars afterparty hosted by music moguls Beyoncé and Jay-Z. The incident, if true, adds fuel to existing rumours of a rift between the two artists, who share a significant professional and personal history spanning over 17 years.
The alleged confrontation reportedly took place on Sunday night, though the specific catalyst for the tension remains unclear. Sources close to Justin Bieber, speaking to entertainment news outlet TMZ, described the interaction as a “heated exchange,” with Usher allegedly approaching the “Baby” singer with considerable “energy and anger.” While the report indicated the encounter was intense, it clarified that there was no physical contact involved.

However, conflicting accounts have emerged, with sources telling the social media platform Deuxmoi that initial reports of a significant run-in were exaggerated. According to these sources, the interaction was far less dramatic. They claim that Justin Bieber simply “did not want to engage in conversation with Usher.” The Deuxmoi sources further elaborated that there was “no specific point of tension (no fight, no yelling, no cursing) just a personal choice to avoid an interaction.”
The star-studded event, attended by a constellation of A-list celebrities including Michael B. Jordan, Taylor Swift, and Timothée Chalamet, as well as Justin’s wife, Hailey Bieber, provided a backdrop for this alleged, albeit possibly minor, discord.
A Mentorship Forged in Music
The professional relationship between Justin Bieber and Usher began when Bieber was just 13 years old. After being discovered by manager Scooter Braun, Bieber was introduced to Usher, who would become a pivotal figure in his early career. This mentorship was cemented through a collaborative venture that led to the formation of RBMG Records.
Usher himself recounted the initial stages of their connection in a 2016 interview. He explained that he had heard about Bieber through industry buzz and expressed his desire for a formal meeting with the young talent and his manager. This led to a bidding war between Usher and Scooter Braun to sign the burgeoning star. The eventual agreement saw the birth of RBMG Records, under which Bieber released his debut album in 2009, featuring a collaboration with Usher on the track “First Dance.”
A Collaborative Journey and Personal Milestones
Since their initial collaboration, Usher and Justin Bieber have worked together on numerous tracks and shared stages across the globe. One of Bieber’s most significant early performances was at the 2011 Grammy Awards, where he performed alongside his mentor, Usher. The night was a triumph for both, with Usher taking home an award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, a moment Bieber celebrated with an enthusiastic embrace.

The professional synergy continued, with Usher joining Bieber on his Purpose World Tour in 2016. He made a memorable appearance at a show in Atlanta, performing fan favourites such as “U Got It Bad” and “I Don’t Mind.” Beyond their professional endeavours, their bond extended into their personal lives. Usher was a guest at Justin Bieber’s 2019 wedding to Hailey Baldwin, and the “My Boo” hitmaker was even seen serenading the groom as he cut his wedding cake.
Shifting Dynamics and Recent Concerns
Fans began to notice a shift in their relationship when it was observed that Justin Bieber was no longer following Usher on Instagram. This observation came a year after Bieber publicly expressed his admiration for Usher’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2024, posting a heartfelt message: “Love you my brother. No one can sing and dance the way you do. Love you from the depths of my heart.” Despite this public display of affection, there have been no apparent public interactions between them since.
Recent developments involving Sean “Diddy” Combs have reportedly cast a shadow over Bieber’s relationships. An insider suggested that Bieber was “completely thrown” by the charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution against Combs, given the close proximity of many individuals who were instrumental in Bieber’s rise to fame to Combs. This alleged distress has led Bieber to withdraw and avoid discussing the matter.

Combs was ultimately found guilty on two counts of transportation for prostitution, though acquitted of more serious charges, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Bieber, through a spokesperson, publicly confirmed in May of the previous year that he was “not among Sean Combs’ victims.”
A resurfaced video from the year prior showed Bieber and Combs spending time together, reportedly for “48 hours.” Usher, during his own teenage years, had also spent a year living with Combs. In a 2016 interview, Usher described the experience as “pretty wild” and “crazy,” noting that “very curious things” occurred that he “didn’t necessarily understand.”
The current status of Justin Bieber and Usher’s friendship, particularly in light of these recent events and the alleged afterparty incident, remains a topic of speculation within the entertainment industry. Representatives for both artists have been contacted for comment.
