‘Blessed to Have JC’: Titans Content with Reynolds’ Absence

Jayden Campbell’s Journey to Becoming an Elite NRL Halfback

Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay has expressed strong confidence in Jayden Campbell’s potential to become an elite NRL halfback. He emphasized that re-signing Campbell was a top priority for the club, highlighting the young player’s unique qualities both on and off the field.

Campbell will be playing at halfback in the upcoming derby against Brisbane, alongside Adam Reynolds. Both players have shown mutual respect for each other’s skills, with Reynolds even mentioning his admiration for Campbell in recent interviews.

Reynolds’ own journey took an unexpected turn when he was not signed by the Titans in 2021. Instead, the Broncos secured his services, leading to a successful season in 2025. This situation, while occurring before Campbell’s time with the team, serves as a reminder of the importance of securing talent for the long term.

For Campbell, this opportunity has allowed him to solidify his position within the team, extend his contract until 2031, and work towards achieving his dream of following in his father Preston Campbell’s footsteps as a club legend.

Hannay shared his thoughts on Campbell’s character, stating: “I feel blessed that we have kept JC and not just for his ability as a player. He is a terrific young man, humble and hard-working.”

The coach also highlighted the significance of Campbell’s family legacy, noting that his father is a legend of the club. “I’ve just been struck by the character of the young man and I’m certainly very happy with where we are at with our halfback,” Hannay added.

Personal Life and Professional Commitment

On a personal note, Campbell is currently on “baby watch” as his partner Teagan is expecting their first child together. While the intention is for him to play in the derby, the Titans will allow him to make the final decision based on circumstances.

Campbell has been performing exceptionally well this season, contributing with two try assists last week and two tries in the previous match. His instincts and brilliance on the field have been evident, making him a key player for the team.

One of the most notable developments in Campbell’s game has been his kicking ability. His kicks achieve hang time similar to Parramatta’s Mitchell Moses, showcasing his natural talent and fluidity.

“It is one of the underrated parts of his game. Some guys kick a footy and it sounds different and goes further … and Jayden is one of them,” Hannay said.

“He has got this timing with his kick that is very natural and fluid. He is very accurate and has that Moses ball flight when he kicks the ball.”

Hannay has never had any concerns about Campbell’s ability to perform at a high level. “What you see at the moment is just a glimpse of what JC is ultimately going to be, with his best still in front of him,” he said.

The Derby and Classic Match-Ups

The upcoming derby promises to be a thrilling encounter, with several classic match-ups set to take place. One of the most compelling is the clash between Brisbane prop Payne Haas and his brother Klese, who plays for the Titans. Payne has been cleared to play after recovering from a shoulder injury.

“I’m sure everyone is looking forward to seeing the two brothers come at each other,” said Broncos coach Michael Maguire.

This match-up adds an extra layer of excitement to the derby, with fans eager to see how the brothers will perform against each other. The competition between the teams is always intense, and this year’s fixture is expected to be no different.
