Carlton Faces Challenges with New Suspension
Life at Carlton has become more challenging for the team, as off-season recruit Will Hayward has received a one-match suspension. The suspension was issued after Hayward’s swinging arm hit North Melbourne’s George Wardlaw during the Good Friday clash at Marvel Stadium. The incident occurred in the third quarter and involved Hayward’s closed fist and arm striking Wardlaw’s stomach and rib cage. This led to a down the field free kick, which resulted in a goal by Nick Larkey.
Carlton is expected to appeal the decision and request that the tribunal downgrade the sanction from a suspension to a fine. The Australian Football League (AFL) has made changes to its rules regarding such incidents for the 2026 season. According to the updated ruling, “Intentional Strikes to a victim player’s body or head will usually be classified as Medium Impact at a minimum (resulting in at least a one-match sanction), rather than the previous grading as Low Impact.”
The Match Review Officer (MRO) graded the incident as a strike with intentional conduct, medium impact, and body contact. However, Carlton may argue that the outcome was low impact, as evidenced by Wardlaw staying on the ground and continuing to play the match.
Key Players Out for Carlton
With the suspension of Hayward, Carlton will be without key players heading into their Gather Round clash against Adelaide on Thursday night. The team is already missing defensive pair Jacob Weitering and Harry Dean, both of whom are dealing with concussions.
Other MRO Updates
In other news related to the Match Review Office, Adelaide captain Jordan Dawson can accept a $1500 sanction, which includes $1000 for an early plea. This penalty is for making careless contact with an umpire during the first quarter of the Adelaide-Fremantle match on Friday night.
Similarly, Dockers ruckman Luke Jackson has also been dealt with the same sanction. He was involved in a first quarter incident where he made careless conduct with an umpire. Both Dawson and Jackson are facing penalties for their respective actions.
