Bosnia Accuses Italy of Disrespect After Penalty Shootout Celebrations
Cardiff, Wales – Tensions are simmering ahead of the World Cup play-off final between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy, with Bosnian fans levelling accusations of “disrespect and arrogance” against the Italian squad. The controversy stems from footage circulating on social media showing members of the Italian team celebrating Bosnia’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Wales at Cardiff City Stadium.
Bosnia secured their spot in the final with a thrilling 4-2 penalty win after the match ended 1-1 in regular time. Former Manchester City striker Edin Džeko was the hero for Bosnia, netting an 86th-minute equaliser to cancel out Dan James’s 51st-minute opener for the hosts.

The match then went to a nail-biting penalty shootout. Brennan Johnson missed his spot-kick for Wales, and Neco Williams saw his effort saved by Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. This opened the door for Kerim Alajbegović, who calmly slotted home to send Wales crashing out and Bosnia into the play-off final.
The result means Bosnia will now face Italy on Tuesday, with a coveted place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, on the line. Italy had already booked their own ticket to the final by defeating Northern Ireland 2-1, courtesy of goals from Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean.
Despite the upcoming clash, it appears Italy may have been quietly favouring a tie against Bosnia, who are ranked 66th in the world, a full 30 places below Wales. This perceived slight has been amplified by the celebratory footage.
The Controversial Celebrations
Members of the Italian national team, including Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, were filmed in a private box at the New Balance Era in Bergamo, cheering and celebrating Bosnia’s triumph over Wales. The video, which has since gone viral, has been interpreted by many Bosnian supporters as a sign of disrespect and premature arrogance.
A prominent Bosnian fan account, @BosniaNTBall, was quick to voice their displeasure. “Look at this disrespect and arrogance by Italy,” the account posted on social media. “They were already celebrating after we won on penalties. We will take this into account in Zenica!” The statement clearly indicates that this perceived slight will be a motivating factor for the Bosnian team when they host Italy in their home city of Zenica.
The Italian team, currently sitting 12th in the FIFA rankings, are the highest-ranked nation participating in the play-offs. They are particularly motivated to qualify, having missed out on the last two World Cups, a stark contrast to their proud footballing history.
Welsh Heartbreak and a Glimpse of the Future
For Wales, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, especially given the manner of their elimination. Manager Craig Bellamy expressed his deep disappointment, stating that his “heart hurts” after his side was knocked out in the same fashion as they were by Poland exactly two years prior in their Euro 2024 play-off final.

“I’m going to hurt tonight. It’s going to be a sleepless night,” Bellamy admitted in the post-match press conference. “It makes me more determined – the sun will rise tomorrow. There will be a solution.”
Following the final whistle, Bellamy gathered his players on the pitch for a heartfelt address.
- Bellamy acknowledged the immediate pain of the loss but sought to offer a glimmer of hope for the future. He emphasised that despite the current disappointment, there are “exciting times ahead” for the squad.
- He highlighted the upcoming Nations League campaign, where Wales will compete in Group A, and the tantalising prospect of qualifying for the home nations’ European Championship.
- Bellamy reiterated his belief in the team’s potential for growth, stating, “It’s not a bad time to be a Welsh footballer.”

- The emotional toll of the defeat was evident in Bellamy’s words. He confessed that he “haven’t really felt like this towards a group of players” before, and that seeing his players so visibly disheartened “hurts you more.”
- Despite the setback, Bellamy remains optimistic about the team’s trajectory. He expressed his conviction that the current Welsh team will “continue improving” and that new talent emerging will further strengthen the squad, leading to a “bright future for Wales.”
