Lady Violet Bridgerton: A Potential Spin-Off Star?
Fans of the wildly popular Netflix period drama Bridgerton have already been treated to a deep dive into the backstory of Queen Charlotte with a successful spin-off. Now, executive producer Shonda Rhimes has hinted that another beloved matriarch might be gracing our screens with her own dedicated series: Lady Violet Bridgerton.
Rhimes, speaking on a podcast with Craig Melvin, expressed her long-held belief that Violet, played by the talented Ruth Gemmell, possesses the compelling narrative to anchor a spin-off. “I’ve always said that I thought if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about,” Rhimes stated, confirming it’s a “possibility” the creative team is exploring.
Lady Violet Bridgerton has been a constant presence throughout the Bridgerton saga, appearing in all four seasons released to date. Portrayed by Ruth Gemmell, she is the devoted mother to a brood of prominent characters, including those played by Phoebe Dynevor, Jonathan Bailey, and Luke Thompson. The most recent season saw the widowed Violet embark on a new chapter, becoming engaged to Lord Anderson, portrayed by Daniel Francis. This development has undoubtedly sparked further interest in her personal journey and romantic history.
Navigating Character Departures and Future Storylines
The Bridgerton universe, known for its ability to re-centre on new characters with each season, has also experienced some significant cast changes. Showrunner Jess Brownell recently addressed speculation surrounding the potential recasting of key figures from earlier seasons.
The latest season, for instance, shifted its focus to the burgeoning romance between Sophie (Yerin Ha) and Benedict (Luke Thompson). While many of the original cast members have remained integral to the series across multiple seasons, Bridgerton has seen notable departures. Regé-Jean Page, who captivated audiences as the Duke of Hastings, exited after the first season. Similarly, Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne, concluded her role after season two.

Fan theories have suggested that these popular characters might be recast to facilitate their return to the Bridgerton narrative. However, Brownell has firmly put these rumours to rest. In an interview with Variety, she clarified, “We are not interested in recasting the characters. I think it would [be] a disservice to everything Regé and Phoebe set up in season one, and all the beautiful work they put into those characters.”
Brownell elaborated on the show’s approach to guest appearances, stating, “We would love to potentially have them back at some point, but I think, logistically, we want to make sure we bring them back when we have something really meaty for them.” She further emphasised that a mere cameo would feel insufficient: “To have them come back to say a line at a funeral and just prove that they were there, it wouldn’t feel right for many reasons.” The showrunner also noted the nature of television, where characters can exist hypothetically off-screen, and expressed a desire to find the right opportunity to reunite the cast in the future.
The Evolving Careers of Former Stars
Since their departures from Bridgerton, both Regé-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor have forged successful paths in the film industry. Page has been active in cinema, appearing in the spy thriller Black Bag and the fantasy blockbuster Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. Dynevor has also showcased her talent on the big screen, featuring in films such as the erotic thriller Fair Play.

The continued success and evolving storylines within the Bridgerton franchise, coupled with the potential for spin-offs focusing on established characters like Lady Violet, suggest a bright future for the beloved series. The show’s ability to introduce new narratives while honouring its established characters and their legacies is a testament to its enduring appeal. As fans eagerly await further developments, the possibility of exploring Lady Violet’s past offers an exciting new avenue for the Bridgerton universe.
