Broncos Hit by Setback as Haas Out 6-8 Weeks, Teammate Hospitalised with Lung Clot

Broncos Face Major Injury Crisis

The Brisbane Broncos are facing a significant challenge as their injury woes have worsened, with several key players set to miss crucial matches. The team is now dealing with the absence of multiple players, which could severely impact their performance in upcoming games.

Payne Haas, a vital prop for the Broncos, is expected to be out for 6-8 weeks due to a Grade 3 medial ligament tear. This injury occurred during Saturday night’s game against the Wests Tigers, where the team managed to secure a thrilling one-point victory. However, Haas’ injury raises concerns about his participation in the State of Origin opener on May 27, as he may not return to NRL action before the NSW squad is named.

In addition to Haas, fellow prop Corey Jensen has been hospitalised with a blood clot on his lung. The club confirmed that Jensen underwent scans following the game, which revealed a pulmonary embolism. He is currently in the hospital for observation, and while the exact recovery time is unclear, it is expected that he will be out for several weeks.

Kotoni Staggs and Jesse Arthars are also in doubt for the upcoming match against the Bulldogs. Staggs is dealing with a plantar fascia strain in his foot, while Arthars has been diagnosed with a tear to his interosseous membrane in his leg. The Broncos have not yet determined when these two players will be able to return to action.

This situation leaves the Broncos with the possibility of having 14 regular players missing in Round 8 against the Bulldogs. Players such as Reece Walsh (cheekbone), Ben Hunt (knee), Pat Carrigan (suspended), and Blake Mozer (jaw) are already absent from the team.

Impact on Team Strategy

With so many players sidelined, the Broncos will need to make strategic adjustments to their lineup. Utility back Hayze Perham could be called into the starting side if Arthars is ruled out, having come onto the six-man bench against the Tigers. Ben Talty is in line to be promoted from the bench to the starting side to replace Haas. Additionally, young talent Antonio Verhoeven could come in for Staggs if the centre fails to prove his fitness.

Despite these challenges, the team should at least be boosted by the return of hooker Cory Paix from concussion. His presence could provide much-needed stability in the backline.

Player Reactions and Management

After the game against the Tigers, Staggs revealed that he initially thought he had torn a ligament in his foot. Brien Seeney of the ‘NRL Physio’ account noted that this is the same issue teammate Jordan Riki has been dealing with. He suggested that Staggs might be able to manage the pain with some treatment but may need to sit out for a couple of weeks depending on the severity.

Coach Michael Maguire praised Staggs for his performance, stating, “Kotoni was excellent. He had a bit of a foot issue going on early in the game but he bit down (on the mouthguard) and that’s Kotoni, he loves his team and he loves the Broncos.”

As the Broncos navigate this difficult period, the focus will be on managing the injuries and ensuring that the team remains competitive despite the setbacks. The coming weeks will be crucial for the club as they look to recover and prepare for the challenges ahead.
