Rising Star Blake Mozer Faces Uncertain Future at Brisbane Broncos
Brisbane Broncos’ rising star, Blake Mozer, has found himself in a precarious position as the club re-signs veteran Cory Paix for another two seasons. This development has sparked discussions about Mozer’s future with the team, with some suggesting that he may need to seek opportunities elsewhere if he wants to secure consistent first-grade game time.
Mozer, who is seen as the future of the Broncos, has been compared to legendary players like Cameron Smith. However, his journey has been hindered by injuries and competition from established names such as Ben Hunt, Billy Walters, and Tyson Smoothy. Despite being re-signed through to the end of 2027, Mozer has only managed to play nine NRL games so far, with injury playing a significant role in limiting his appearances.
The situation has led to questions about whether Mozer will be able to break into the starting line-up without relying on injuries. With Billy Walters set to be off-contract at the end of this season, former Broncos captain Andrew McCullough suggested that Mozer should consider exploring other options.
“Depending on Billy (Walters) and his situation, but I’m not too sure of Blake’s contract and where he’s at,” McCullough said on SENQ Breakfast. “But I reckon he’s every chance of looking to go somewhere else. If he wants to go, there’s obviously Billy. (Ben) Hunt is potentially gonna go around (for) another year. (Cory) Paix has got two years and what do they do with Billy. So, it doesn’t add up at the end (of the day) with a couple of teams coming in (to the competition).”
Mozer’s potential departure could be influenced by several factors. The Broncos currently have an overabundance of hookers, with five players competing for limited spots. This has led to speculation that Mozer might not get the opportunity to prove himself at the highest level unless the club makes changes to its roster.
Broncos legend Corey Parker has even suggested that Mozer could leave the club on their own initiative, given the current imbalance in the team’s structure.
“They’ve got five (hookers) at the moment, and that just doesn’t fit into two,” Parker said. “So maybe he does take an option and go play for another club.”
With the dummy half market in the NRL being relatively thin, there is potential interest in Mozer from other clubs. His talent and potential have not gone unnoticed, and if he can demonstrate consistency, he could attract attention from teams looking to strengthen their backline.
In addition to Mozer, the Broncos are also developing young talents like Cameron Bukowski, who could provide further competition for positions in the future. This adds to the uncertainty surrounding Mozer’s long-term prospects at Red Hill.
As the 21-year-old looks to make his mark this season, the path forward remains unclear. While he may still have a future with the Broncos, the current landscape suggests that he may need to explore other options to fulfill his potential. Whether he chooses to stay or move on, the next few months will be crucial in determining his career trajectory.
