Key Injuries Impact Brisbane Broncos
The Brisbane Broncos have faced a challenging week as several key players have been ruled out due to injuries following their 26-12 victory over the Titans on Easter Saturday. Reece Walsh, Ben Hunt, and Adam Reynolds are among those affected, with their recovery timelines ranging from one to eight weeks.
Reece Walsh, the team’s superstar fullback, suffered a fractured cheekbone during the match when he tackled Kurtis Morrin low. The injury resulted in a failed head injury assessment, leading to his hospitalization. Walsh shared videos of himself in the hospital on his Instagram and Snapchat accounts, but later deleted them after they showed him inhaling a green whistle for pain relief. He also posted photos of himself hugging his daughter in the hospital, captioned “My people.”
Ben Hunt is set to miss six to eight weeks due to a grade-three medial collateral ligament tear. Meanwhile, Adam Reynolds will be sidelined for one to two weeks after sustaining a grade-two adductor longus strain, commonly known as a groin strain. Reynolds left the field in the 25th minute with a “tender” groin and did not return to the game. The skipper was replaced at halfback by Hunt, who played out the rest of the match but mentioned he had “stretched” his medial ligament.
Ezra Mam, the five-eighth, was seen limping throughout the game, but coach Michael Maguire confirmed that he was injury-free. Mam played 80 minutes and was one of the Broncos’ standout performers, contributing two line breaks, setting up two tries, and scoring one himself.
Team Resilience and Depth
Despite the setbacks, the Broncos showed resilience in their performance. Coach Michael Maguire praised the team for their determination and ability to overcome challenges. “I’m just really proud of how they’ve been fighting through this period of time,” Maguire said. “They showed their resolve and what they’re capable of and they had to do that tonight.”
Maguire highlighted the depth of the Broncos’ squad, emphasizing that the team has prepared well for such situations. “We’ve got a squad. We all talk about the squad,” he said. “Tonight, Reyno went off and Reecey went off and you’ve still got to perform, and that’s the expectation that the leaders have and we have as the group.”
When Walsh was injured, Jesse Arthars moved from the left wing to fullback, while Antonio Verhoeven replaced Arthars on the wing, making his NRL debut. Maguire indicated that either Arthars or Hayze Perham could be selected at fullback for the upcoming match against North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
Upcoming Challenges
The first test for the Broncos in this injury-hit period is a clash with North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, followed by matches against Wests Tigers, Canterbury, and the Roosters. The team will need to rely on its depth and adaptability to maintain their winning streak.
Maguire expressed confidence in the team’s ability to handle the challenges ahead. “The clubs work really hard to make sure they have that depth, so we’ll just call upon that,” he said.
As the Broncos continue their journey in the 2026 NRL season, the focus will be on maintaining momentum despite the injuries. With strong leadership and a deep roster, the team aims to remain competitive and achieve success in the coming weeks.
