Remembering Nicholas Brendon: A Heartfelt Look Back at the Buffy Star’s Final Days and Lasting Legacy
The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Nicholas Brendon, the beloved actor best known for his role as Xander Harris in the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Brendon passed away peacefully in his sleep last weekend at the age of 54, with his family confirming the cause as natural causes. This news has led many to reflect on his life, his career, and a poignant final video he shared with fans just about a year before his passing.
Brendon’s health had been a concern in recent years. He experienced a heart attack in 2023 and was also managing a congenital heart defect. Furthermore, he had been diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome, a condition that causes significant back pain and other debilitating symptoms, for which he underwent surgery in 2021.
A Glimpse into His Final Moments: “Candle Time with Nicky”
In a touching Instagram Live session, aptly titled “Candle time with Nicky,” Brendon engaged with his fans, answering questions and reading their heartfelt comments. The video, shared approximately a year before his death, offered a window into his personality and his appreciation for those who followed his career.

Fans expressed their admiration, with some calling him “iconic” and admitting to having had crushes on him for years. Brendon responded with genuine warmth, stating, “Well that’s a nice one, that’s actually a really sweet thing to say. Wow – thank you.”

When asked if he had ever watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Brendon revealed, “I have watched every single episode of Buffy.” However, he humorously added, “If I were to do a Buffy trivia with a Buffy fan, I would lose hands down. I know this because it happened.” This self-deprecating humour was a characteristic trait that endeared him to many.
More Than Just Xander: A Career Defined by Passion
Brendon’s portrayal of Xander spanned seven years, and he appeared in all but one of the show’s 144 episodes. His journey into acting was deeply personal, stemming from a desire to manage a stutter. Starring in Buffy proved to be a significant turning point, as he shared that the experience “helped me a lot.”

His family released a heartfelt statement paying tribute to their son and brother. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the statement read. It acknowledged his well-known acting career but also highlighted his more recent passion for painting and art. “In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”

The family further elaborated that those close to Brendon understood that his art was “the purest reflection of who he was.” They also acknowledged his past struggles, seeking privacy during their time of grief while celebrating a life lived with “intensity, imagination, and heart.” They concluded by expressing gratitude for the outpouring of love and support.
Tributes from His Buffy Family
The news of Brendon’s passing prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance from his Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-stars.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular vampire slayer, shared a touching tribute on Instagram. She posted a photo of herself with Brendon and captioned it with lyrics that resonated deeply: “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realises, because nobody’s watching me’. I saw you, Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
Alyson Hannigan, who portrayed Willow Rosenberg, wrote a loving message: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”
Emma Caulfield, who played Anya Jenkins, shared a video of Brendon discussing their duet from the show’s musical episode. Her caption read: “My heart is heavy. I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Let this clip of us giving it our all be a placeholder. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”

- Greg Vaughan, who had a guest role in season two, expressed his sadness: “Heavy hearts for anyone who’s known, worked with and was just talking about! Nick, you were beyond kind, tremendously funny, and everyone loved! You’ve gained your wings because you were nothing short of an Angel! R. I. P. brotha.”
Beyond Buffy: A Diverse Acting Career
While Xander Harris remains his most recognisable role, Nicholas Brendon had a diverse acting career. He also made appearances in popular shows such as:
- Private Practice
- Without a Trace
- Faking It
Arguably, his second most significant role was that of Kevin Lynch in the long-running crime drama Criminal Minds, where he appeared across seasons three to ten. His talent and presence left a mark on numerous productions throughout his career.
