Bulldogs on high alert for struggling Dons

The Western Bulldogs’ Challenge Against Essendon

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has acknowledged that his team’s strong start to the season comes with its own set of challenges. With a perfect 3-0 record, the Bulldogs have been praised for their impressive performances against Brisbane, GWS, and Adelaide. However, Beveridge is aware that this success could bring about a sense of complacency, which he believes could be exploited by struggling teams like Essendon.

Essendon, on the other hand, finds itself in a difficult position, having lost three consecutive matches to Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, and North Melbourne. This has extended the club’s losing streak to 16 games, making them strong contenders for the wooden spoon. Despite their struggles, Essendon coach Brad Scott remains optimistic, even as calls for his dismissal grow louder.

Beveridge emphasized that the Bulldogs must remain vigilant and not take their position for granted. “We’re being spruiked a little bit at the moment just purely because of our ladder position. There’s a vulnerability in that,” he said. “If we go into Sunday quite content with who we are, we’re going to be vulnerable, it’s just human nature.”

He also pointed out that when a team is at the bottom of the ladder, they often adopt an “all bets are off” mentality, which can make them unpredictable. “It can be really dangerous if you haven’t got your wits about you,” Beveridge added.

Managing Expectations and Pressure

Beveridge expressed concern over the excessive criticism directed at struggling clubs. “I always think it goes too far, but that’s the acceptance we have to have as senior coaches. That’s the environment we lead and manage in,” he said. He stressed the importance of staying focused and not letting external pressures affect the team’s performance.

“The important thing for all of us in these positions is we don’t let it unsettle us,” Beveridge continued. “I’ve talked historically about staying in the tent and just taking care of things you can influence and control.”

Injuries and Team Selections

The Bulldogs will face some challenges in their upcoming match due to injuries. Midfielder Tom Liberatore is sidelined with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss the next two to four weeks. Despite a strong 33-disposal performance in the VFL, the team decided not to include Adam Treloar in the lineup.

Creative forward Cody Weightman is also dealing with a long-term knee injury and may return to VFL duties in about a month. “He’s still building, but he’s getting through a lot more training. Very encouraging,” Beveridge said.

On the Essendon side, forward Nate Caddy will be absent due to concussion. However, Nik Cox has been named in the extended squad for what would be his first AFL game since missing the entire previous season due to concussion.

Preparing for the Match

As both teams prepare for the clash at Marvel Stadium, Beveridge is urging his players to maintain focus and avoid any sense of overconfidence. He knows that Essendon, despite their struggles, will be determined to prove themselves on the field.

The match promises to be a test of the Bulldogs’ resilience and ability to handle pressure. With the stakes high, both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win in what could be a pivotal moment in their respective seasons.
