A Sudden Setback for Ed Richards
One week after an injury that seemed minor but kept exceptional Bulldogs midfielder Ed Richards from playing in the match against the Bombers, he made a surprising return to the lineup during the weekend’s Gather Round. However, his brief appearance ended in disappointment when he was helped off the field during a game his team was already trailing significantly. This development raised serious concerns about his fitness and potential impact on the team.
Richards’ coach, Luke Beveridge, addressed the media following the Bulldogs’ first loss of the season. He remained cautious about the midfielder’s immediate future, emphasizing that scans were necessary to determine the full extent of the injury. One thing is clear: the ankle injury sustained against Hawthorn is unrelated to the knee issue that had kept Richards out of the Essendon clash.
“We don’t know the extent of it yet, we’ll have a look at it through the imaging and then get back to you,” Beveridge said. “We just hope it’s not too bad, but I can’t give you anything until the medical staff give us something definitive.”
The Impact of Tim English’s Absence
In the Bulldogs’ first loss of the year, the team was without their first-choice ruckman, Tim English. This absence was clearly felt as the Hawks dominated from stoppages, with the coach expressing frustration over how easily they scored from this area.
“To give up six goals from our defensive 50 stoppages, it’s unheard of for us, it’s really poor,” Beveridge said. “It was significant, you’d have to say the most significant aspect of the scoring for either team … regardless of whether Tim’s in the ruck or not – and this week he isn’t – we shouldn’t be giving up that kind of score.”
The Dogs are desperate to have their big man back in the side, but it seems certain that English will miss the upcoming clash with the Cats, at a minimum, as he deals with an MCL injury.
“I think I said the other day it’ll probably be mid next week (before a call is made on English’s return), we’re just waiting for it to settle and to give you that prediction. Not sure what it is yet.”
Debutant Struggles Against Hawthorn
Debutant Louis Emmett and habitual defender Rory Lobb were unable to match Hawthorn’s experienced ruck pairings throughout the night, suffering multiple key metrics losses in a devastating manner.
The Hawks recorded a hitout supremacy of 64-17 on the night, and lost hitouts to advantage by a damning 21-3. The Dogs engine room lost clearances by 12, and the side lost the contested possession count by 21 on a challenging evening for those of a Footscray persuasion.
These statistics are extraordinary for Beveridge’s team and highlight the critical need for the return of their mobile ruckman and versatile midfielder. The absence of key players has left the Bulldogs vulnerable, and the team must regroup quickly to address these issues before their next match.
Looking Ahead
With the Bulldogs facing a tough challenge ahead, the focus will now shift to the recovery of both Richards and English. Their return could significantly alter the team’s performance, especially in crucial areas like ruck contests and stoppage play.
As the team prepares for their upcoming fixtures, the importance of having their key players back on the field cannot be overstated. The road to recovery may be long, but with the right support and medical care, there is hope that the Bulldogs can bounce back stronger than ever.
