‘Bunnies Great’ shares heartbreaking health update

A Heartfelt Farewell at the Good Friday Clash

Nathan Merritt, a beloved figure in the rugby league world, has shared a poignant health update following a devastating double diagnosis of stage-four cancer. The 42-year-old former Rabbitohs player, who made 218 appearances for the club during his 237-game NRL career, recently attended the traditional Good Friday clash against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium. This event marked a bittersweet moment for Merritt, as he believes he may have less than a year left to live.

Merritt was invited to the match as a guest of the Bunnies, and he sees this game as possibly his last NRL match ever. Speaking to Brad Fittler on Nine’s coverage, Merritt expressed that he is “just doing his best” and taking each day as it comes. He was accompanied by 20 friends and family members in a corporate box, making the occasion a celebration of his time with Souths.

“It’s a good day for me. I’ve got a box up there with 20 family and friends – it’s a great occasion for me to have a little bit of celebration about Souths and what I’ve done here, and just enjoy the moment as well,” he said.

Merritt revealed last month that he had been diagnosed with oesophageal and liver cancer. His oesophageal diagnosis came in November, but the liver cancer was more recent. The father of five, whose children range in age from 11 to 21, has lost about 22kg since starting chemotherapy.

When asked about his most memorable Good Friday moment, Merritt recalled the 2013 clash where the Rabbitohs won 17-12. With the scores locked at 6-6 midway through the second half, Merritt received a pinpoint perfect kick from Adam Reynolds that led to a crucial try in the corner.

“It was a trick-shot try – Reyno kicked it on the sideline to me and I scored in the corner. That was fun – that’s a highlight I remember,” he said.

Merritt’s involvement in the match didn’t end there. He later made a crucial offload to Bryson Goodwin, helping secure the victory. The Rabbitohs Foundation has set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist Merritt and his family with ongoing medical expenses.
