GWS Giants Secure Dominant Victory, But Suffer Injuries
In a thrilling clash at Barossa Park, the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants delivered a commanding performance, securing a 56-point win against Richmond. However, the victory was overshadowed by injury concerns as emerging star Aaron Cadman and veteran Stephen Coniglio were ruled out of the upcoming derby against the Swans due to concussions.
Cadman, who returned from a pelvic injury, played a pivotal role in the Giants’ success, kicking four goals in his first game of the season. His energetic performance, including three goals in the first quarter, helped the Giants establish an early lead. The team’s score of 20.11 (131) to 11.9 (75) was a testament to their strong start and overall dominance.
However, the game took a turn in the fourth quarter when Cadman suffered a knee to the head and failed a concussion test. This setback forced him to miss the upcoming match against the Swans. Similarly, veteran player Stephen Coniglio was ruled out before halftime after being struck by a stray boot from Sam Banks.
Giants coach Adam Kingsley expressed his disappointment over the loss of two key players but praised Cadman’s performance. “He was fantastic for us – hard to play on, always on the move, launching at the ball, finishing his work,” Kingsley said. He added that both players were feeling okay and would follow concussion protocols, hoping to return in two weeks against North Melbourne.
The Giants’ performance was marked by strong centre-bounce work and effective stoppage play, which contributed to their impressive start. “We re-established our scoring game, which was nice – we haven’t been able to do that for three weeks,” Kingsley noted.
Richmond put up a fight, narrowing the gap to 20 points in the third quarter, but the Giants maintained control throughout the game. Brent Daniels and Toby Bedford each kicked three goals, while Jesse Hogan added two, along with Ollie Hannaford, Ryan Angwin, and Jake Riccardi.

On the other side, Richmond’s Mykelti Lefau delivered a career-best performance with four goals, and Liam Fawcett added three. Sam Lalor and ex-Giants players Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper also made significant contributions.

Despite the loss, Richmond coach Adem Yze acknowledged the team’s efforts. “The response after quarter-time was a positive for the middle part of the game, but we just weren’t up to standard for the first quarter,” he said. He highlighted the need for improvement, particularly in the opening stages of the game.
With the win, the Giants have set the stage for an exciting upcoming schedule, while Richmond will look to bounce back in their next match against North Melbourne on Sunday.
