Canterbury Bulldogs Take a Stand on Social Media
Canterbury Bulldogs head coach Cameron Ciraldo has publicly supported the club’s decision to disable social media comments on their official team announcement for Round 5. This move comes in response to growing concerns about the negative and sometimes harmful comments directed at players and staff.
The Bulldogs have faced increased scrutiny in the early stages of the season, with their attacking performance not meeting expectations. In three games, they have only managed to score 45 points, continuing a trend that began during the latter half of 2025. This decline followed significant changes to the team’s spine, which have not yielded the desired results.
Despite some improvements in attack during the second half of last week, Ciraldo has remained committed to his current playing structure. This decision has led to frustration among fans, with some calling for changes and others taking their criticism to extreme levels. There have been instances of threats made against players and staff, prompting the club to take action.
During a recent media appearance, Ciraldo addressed the issue, emphasizing the importance of protecting players from harmful online behavior. He stated:
“We love our fans and we love their passion, but if it crosses the line, we have a duty of care to protect our players.”
Ciraldo praised the club’s decision to shut down social media comments, noting that while everyone has the right to an opinion, there are boundaries that should not be crossed. He expressed pride in the club’s proactive approach and acknowledged the support from other figures within the organization.
Phil Gould, the Bulldogs’ director of football, had previously commented on the issue, stating that those making negative comments were not true fans. Ciraldo echoed this sentiment, adding that the problem extends beyond the club itself.
“I think Gus’s tweet there, he couldn’t have summed it up any better, so I’ll leave that with him.”
Ciraldo also highlighted that the issue is not unique to the Bulldogs but reflects broader societal challenges in sports. He believes that higher authorities need to address what the game stands for and set clear standards.
Future Changes Expected
Ciraldo has indicated that further changes may be implemented in future matches. One example of this was the performance of Stephen Crichton when he was positioned closer to the ball in the previous game against the Newcastle Knights. His improved form suggests that tactical adjustments could play a role in the team’s success moving forward.
Despite their first loss of the season in the match against the Newcastle Knights, the Bulldogs remain optimistic about their prospects this year. They started the season with victories over the St George Illawarra Dragons in Las Vegas and the Canberra Raiders in the nation’s capital during Round 3.
With a strong foundation and a commitment to addressing the challenges they face, the Bulldogs are expected to be competitive in the premiership race this season. The club’s decision to take control of its social media presence reflects a broader effort to maintain a positive environment for players and fans alike.
