Cameron Green’s Struggles in IPL 2026
Cameron Green, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder, continues to face challenges in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Despite being a key player for the three-time champions, Green has not yet been cleared to bowl and has struggled with the bat. In three matches, he has managed only 24 runs. On Monday, during a match against the Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens, Green lasted just two balls, scoring four runs before being dismissed.
The situation surrounding Green’s bowling remains unclear, and this uncertainty has led to increased scrutiny of his batting performances. The Australian all-rounder has been practicing in the nets and gradually increasing his workload, but many pundits believe he should not be starting in the KKR playing XI until he can demonstrate more consistent performance as an all-rounder.
Criticism from Cricketing Experts
Kevin Pietersen and Sanjay Bangar, both prominent voices in cricket commentary, have expressed their concerns about Green’s role in the KKR lineup. During a rain break in the match between KKR and the Punjab Kings, they discussed the need for Green to prove himself before being given a higher batting position.
Pietersen emphasized the importance of cricketing ability over financial considerations. He stated that players must be good enough to perform at a high level, especially when given a critical role like batting at number three in an IPL team. According to Pietersen, Green has not yet demonstrated the necessary skills to justify such a position.
“Cameron Green is not a T20 specialist,” Pietersen added. “He got a century in Mumbai a few years ago, but I haven’t seen enough from him to warrant batting at number three in this format.”
Concerns Over KKR’s Auction Strategy
Sanjay Bangar echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that Green is not a proven T20 performer. He criticized KKR’s decision to spend INR 25.20 crore on Green during the mini auction, suggesting that the franchise could have made a better choice by investing in a more established T20 specialist.
Bangar also urged KKR to consider Rovman Powell instead of Green and Rachin Ravindra. He argued that Powell is a more reliable option due to his experience and consistency in T20 cricket.
“You have to think of specialists,” Bangar said. “If you look at players like Rachin Ravindra and Cameron Green, they are not necessarily proven T20 performers. When selecting overseas players, they must be specialists because there are only four spots available. If Cameron Green isn’t bowling, he doesn’t fit into the category of a batsman for an overseas player.”
KKR’s Lucky Point After Rain Interruption
On Monday, KKR managed to secure one point after the match against the Punjab Kings was abandoned due to rain. The franchise was in a difficult position, having lost two wickets for just 25 runs in 3.4 overs. However, the rain provided a reprieve, allowing them to claim a point despite their poor performance.
This outcome highlights the unpredictable nature of cricket, where external factors can significantly impact a team’s standing. For KKR, it serves as a reminder of the need for consistent performances, especially from key players like Green.
Looking Ahead
As the IPL 2026 season progresses, the focus will remain on Green’s development and his ability to contribute effectively as an all-rounder. The pressure on him to deliver will only increase, and his performance will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. With the right support and strategy, Green may yet find his form and prove his worth to the KKR franchise.
