Campaign seeks to engage all in keeping the coast clean

Residents and visitors in the Weymouth and Portland area are being encouraged to take part in keeping the coastline clean by using free litter-picking kits available at three community hubs. These kits can be borrowed without any cost, making it easier for people to contribute to environmental efforts.

The initiative has expanded to include new locations such as Starbucks at the end of Portland Beach Road, which serves as a hub for Chesil Beach. Another location is the RSPB café at the Swannery car park, supporting activities around Radipole Lake. The most recent addition is Saltwater Shack on Brunswick Terrace, which now supports clean-up efforts at Weymouth Beach.

For anyone interested in participating, the process is simple. All they need to do is visit one of the designated venues and request to use the equipment. There is no requirement to make a purchase, ensuring that the initiative remains accessible to all.

The Weymouth and Portland Marine Litter Project is a community-run environmental effort based in Wyke Regis. It focuses on addressing marine litter along the local coastline, covering areas from Osmington to Chickerell, including Weymouth, Portland Harbour, Chesil Beach, and the Fleet lagoon.

This project was established by local environmentalists with a broader goal than just traditional beach cleans. It aims to reduce litter from its source to the sea through various means, including community engagement, education, and recycling initiatives. The ultimate aim is to ensure that as much waste as possible is reused rather than sent to landfills or incineration.

The project regularly organises litter picks on beaches and around the harbour. These events often occur in response to storms or during busy holiday periods. Volunteers also act as ‘first responders’ when large amounts of debris wash ashore, helping to manage the impact of such events quickly and effectively.

Key Features of the Initiative

  • Accessibility: The free litter-picking kits are available at multiple locations, making it easy for residents and visitors to get involved.
  • Community Engagement: The project encourages active participation from the local community, fostering a sense of responsibility and shared effort.
  • Education and Awareness: Through various programs, the project raises awareness about the importance of keeping the coastline clean and the impact of litter on marine life.
  • Sustainability Focus: By promoting recycling and reuse, the initiative helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or incinerators.
  • Rapid Response: Volunteers are trained to respond quickly to incidents where large quantities of debris wash ashore, helping to mitigate environmental damage.

How to Get Involved

  1. Visit one of the community hubs, such as Starbucks, the RSPB café, or Saltwater Shack.
  2. Ask for the litter-picking kit and any additional information about upcoming clean-up events.
  3. Use the equipment to collect litter from the beach or surrounding areas.
  4. Return the kit to the same location after use.

By taking part in these activities, individuals can make a meaningful contribution to preserving the natural beauty of the Weymouth and Portland coastline. The project not only helps keep the environment clean but also promotes a culture of sustainability and community spirit.
