Barry Manilow’s Triumphant Return: New Album and Health Victory
For devoted fans of 80s music, and indeed for anyone who appreciates resilience and artistic passion, there’s cause for significant celebration. The legendary American singer-songwriter Barry Manilow is set to make a remarkable comeback, not only with a brand-new album but also after a courageous battle with lung cancer. This news arrives at a time when many beloved artists are gracing us with new material, from Harry Styles’ recent release to upcoming works from Irish stars Dermot Kennedy and Niall Horan. However, Manilow’s announcement carries an extra layer of poignancy, marked by a fifteen-year hiatus from recording and his ongoing recovery from a serious health challenge.
Barry Manilow, the maestro behind timeless hits, is poised to release his 33rd studio album, titled What A Time. Slated for release on Sunday, June 5, the album promises a collection of mostly original songs, a testament to his enduring creative spirit. Fans have already had a taste of what’s to come with the debut of his new single, “Sun Shine,” which premiered on BBC Radio 2 earlier this week. This musical offering comes as the 82-year-old artist continues his recovery, a journey he openly shared with his fanbase.
A Personal Health Update and a Message of Hope
In December, Manilow provided a candid update on his health, detailing a challenging period. He shared, “As many of you know, I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks.” This prolonged illness prompted his medical team to investigate further.

“Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK,” he explained. The subsequent scan revealed a critical finding.
“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news,” Manilow wrote, injecting a note of optimism amidst the serious diagnosis.

The “bad news,” as he put it, was the necessity of surgery to remove the cancerous spot. He reassured his fans, stating, “The doctors do not believe it has spread, and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.” This straightforward approach to treatment, coupled with his characteristic humour, offered solace to his concerned followers.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first health hurdle Manilow has faced. He also battled throat cancer in 2020. Given these past health struggles, many fans have understandably worried about his ability to continue performing and creating music. Therefore, the news of his new album and his active return to the music scene will undoubtedly be met with immense joy and relief.
