Camping and caravanning are quintessential Australian pastimes, offering freedom and adventure for countless holidaymakers. However, anyone who’s ever embarked on such a trip knows the undeniable truth: setting up and packing down a campsite can be the most stressful, and often relationship-testing, part of the entire holiday. It’s a common sight at campgrounds across the nation – couples locked in a tense negotiation, or outright argument, as they attempt to manoeuvre a bulky caravan into a confined space, or wrestle with a stubborn tent in the wind.
But one particular caravan park in New South Wales has earned widespread praise for a remarkably simple, yet incredibly effective, solution to this common holiday hurdle. Aptly named the “marriage saver,” this unique offering is making waves among travellers.
The “Marriage Saver” Initiative
Tasman Holiday Parks North Star, nestled in Hastings Point, just north of the popular tourist destination Byron Bay, has introduced a service that has left many families utterly delighted. Instead of facing the daunting task of parking their caravan themselves, guests are being offered the assistance of a tractor to do the job for them.
One mum, who experienced this service firsthand, couldn’t sing its praises enough, awarding it a perfect 10 out of 10. She described the experience as a game-changer, allowing her to kick off her holiday with immediate relaxation rather than pre-holiday stress.
Origins of a Brilliant Idea
Jessica Cruickshank, the marketing manager for the caravan park, shared that the “marriage saver” service has been a staple for weary travellers for “years.” She explained that the concept arose from observing “a few disasters” where caravanners, confident in their own abilities, ended up in frustrating situations. The park realised that it was simply “easier to get the tractor in there” to ensure a smooth and stress-free arrival.
Cruickshank highlighted the core benefit: it provides a “nice way to start your holiday stress-free.” This allows visitors to bypass the parking ordeal and immediately transition into holiday mode, perhaps by “cracking their first beverage and relaxing” instead of wrestling with their vehicle.
A Unique Offering
It’s important to note that this particular service is a unique offering exclusive to the North Star caravan park. While Tasman Holiday Parks has locations across Australia and New Zealand, the “marriage saver” tractor service is not available at their other sites.
The Growing Challenge of Larger Caravans
Cruickshank also pointed out a broader trend contributing to the need for such services. Over time, caravans and the four-wheel-drive vehicles that tow them have become “bigger and better.” This evolution means that parking these larger rigs in tight spots, especially within busy caravan parks where children are often playing, can be an increasingly tricky manoeuvre.
From Peak Season to Year-Round Convenience
Initially, the tractor service was primarily offered during peak holiday periods, such as Christmas and school holidays. However, with the constant activity of families and children heading to and from amenities like the splash park, the park decided to extend the service. The aim is to allow guests to “sit back and have the professionals do it,” ensuring a more relaxed experience for everyone. Cruickshank summarised the dual benefit, stating, “It’s good for us and good for the guests.”
The service has quickly become a favourite among visitors, demonstrating its value and popularity.
Looking Ahead to Easter and Beyond
As Easter approaches, the North Star caravan park is gearing up to welcome travellers from all corners of the country. The park has a full schedule of events planned for both children and adults, promising a vibrant and engaging holiday experience for all.
