Carlton Star Awaits Scan as Untried Duo Dazzles Lions

Cerra’s Hamstring Woes Cast Shadow Over Blues’ Pre-Season Optimism

Carlton midfielder Adam Cerra’s pre-season campaign has been dealt a significant blow with a hamstring injury sustained during a practice match against Brisbane. The setback, which occurred on Wednesday night, casts a frustrating shadow over the club’s preparations for the upcoming season, and insiders suggest it’s highly likely to rule him out of Round 1, now just a fortnight away.

Cerra was unable to complete the game, and the club is reportedly favouring a cautious approach given his history with soft-tissue injuries. “He’ll undergo scans in the coming days to determine the severity of his hamstring,” forwards coach Josh Fraser commented post-match. “We won’t know much more until then.”

This latest injury adds to a concerning pattern for Cerra. Last season, hamstring complaints restricted him to just 13 games. While he managed to bounce back to feature in 19 games in the preceding year, becoming a vital cog in the Blues’ midfield with an average of 25 disposals, the recurring nature of these injuries is a cause for concern. Since his arrival at the club in 2022, Cerra has played 72 games. Demonstrating the club’s faith and investment in the 26-year-old, he signed a long-term contract extension prior to last season, securing his future at Carlton until 2030.

Promising Signs Emerge from Carlton’s Forward Line

Despite the disappointment surrounding Cerra’s injury, there were glimmers of significant encouragement for Blues supporters, particularly from the forward line. First-year player Talor Byrne showcased his potential by kicking three goals in the final quarter, while the combined efforts of Will Hayward and Ben Ainsworth, who contributed six goals between them, offered a tantalising glimpse of Carlton’s attacking potency beyond their star forward, Charlie Curnow.

Byrne’s energetic performance would have been particularly heartening for a fanbase that has, in recent years, yearned for more consistent impact from quality small forwards. Since 2014, only Matthew Wright and Eddie Betts have achieved 30-plus goal seasons amongst Carlton’s smaller forwards, a testament to the evolving and increasingly crucial role of this position in modern AFL.

The addition of Ainsworth and Hayward injects a new dimension into Carlton’s attack. Their ability to provide a threat both at ground level and aerially adds a much-needed layer of unpredictability to an offense that has often relied heavily on marking possessions inside 50 to generate scoring opportunities.

A More Dynamic Forward Unit

Fraser elaborated on the positive developments in the forward half. “I think we’ve become quite dynamic in the front half,” he stated. “When you bring in players like Ainsworth and Hayward, and even the pre-existing guys like Lachie Fogarty and Brodie Kemp, they give you a different look. It’s important we found different avenues to goal even tonight. We didn’t connect on every play, but we need to explore what that looks like.”

He further emphasised the value of the practice match in providing crucial feedback. “Tonight gave us some really good feedback, and to introduce Talor Byrne in the last quarter to kick some goals as well shows we’re starting to build some depth in the front half. I think Hayward and Ainsworth bring different skillsets to the side – they’re multifaceted. They both have got a huge work rate, both pretty good in the air, both apply pressure at ground level.”

Other Notable Performances and Lions’ Concerns

Beyond the forward line, Jagga Smith impressed with his composure and ball use. For Brisbane, emerging talents Will and Levi Ashcroft, alongside Zac Bailey, were among the standout performers.

However, the Lions also faced their own injury concerns. Ryan Lester and recruit Oscar Allen both sustained concussions during the match and will now enter the AFL’s concussion protocols. This unfortunate development means they will miss the reigning premiers’ official practice match against Gold Coast.
