Jamie Carragher Predicts Tottenham’s Relegation from the Premier League
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made a bold prediction that Tottenham Hotspur could be relegated from the Premier League following their latest defeat. The North London club suffered a 1-0 loss to Sunderland in Roberto De Zerbi’s first game as manager, which officially placed them in the relegation zone after West Ham United beat Wolves on Friday night.
De Zerbi now faces an uphill battle to keep his new team in the top flight, with just six games left to turn things around. However, Carragher believes the chances of avoiding relegation are slim.
‘Normally, a new manager comes in and you say, “It’s his first game, that (style of play) has to go out the window,”’ Carragher said on Sky Sports. ‘It had to go out the window for Igor Tudor and it’s the same for Roberto De Zerbi because of where they find themselves.’
Carragher expressed disbelief at the current state of affairs at Tottenham, stating, ‘I can’t believe it. Tottenham look like they’re going to go down. The other teams have something going for them. One point in 24.’
Struggles Continue for Spurs
Tottenham have not won a league match since late December when they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 away from home. Their remaining fixtures include matches against bottom-of-the-table Wolves and relegation rivals Leeds, but they have struggled to secure points in recent games.

Despite these challenges, Carragher remains skeptical about Tottenham’s chances of picking up any more points. He pointed out, ‘You look at fixtures, you think that’s a good game for Tottenham but they’re awful. Do you think Tottenham will go to Wolves, bottom of the league, and win? No chance.’
De Zerbi’s Optimism Amid Challenges
While Carragher is pessimistic about Tottenham’s prospects, De Zerbi remains hopeful. After the match, he praised his team’s performance, stating, ‘I think we played a good game. Not enough to win but we didn’t deserve to lose. We have to accept and move on.’
He acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly in finding better play between the lines. ‘We made two or three mistakes in the last 15 metres and we have to move on into the next game,’ De Zerbi added.
The Italian manager also addressed the injury to Cristian Romero, expressing hope that it would not significantly impact the team. ‘I’m sorry for the result, I’m sorry for the (Cristian) Romero injury and I hope for us and for him that it is not important. We had three or four clear chances to score.’
A Tough Road Ahead
De Zerbi emphasized the importance of maintaining the right spirit despite the difficult season. ‘I spoke with the players five minutes ago and I said that I understand it has been a very tough season. It is a tough moment for everyone and we have to react with the right spirit. The quality of the players is amazing.’
Tottenham’s remaining fixtures include home games against Brighton, Leeds, and Everton, as well as away matches against Wolves, Aston Villa, and Chelsea. With the pressure mounting, the team will need to find a way to turn their fortunes around quickly if they are to avoid relegation.
